What instrument(s) do you play?

If you don't mind me asking, how did you land the gig? How long have you been playing? What is the deal / arrangement like / pay etc..?

Been playing 10 years now. I have a couple friends who have played on ships. One of them has been a musical director for a few years, so he put me in touch with a guy who does auditions for Celebrity Cruises.

Almost every gig I've ever gotten has been through connections. It's all about building your reputation as the guy who shows up on time, is well prepared, returns calls/emails, etc. I can't count the number of times people have told me about the slew of unreliable flaky musicians out there who are a pain in the ass to work with, and how much they appreciate a guy who has his shit together. Recommendations are everything. Also, don't just be a decent player; be the fucking man.

As for pay, well let's just say I got into internet marketing so that I can keep being a musician.

French Horn, E-Flat Alto Horn, Mellophone, Trumpet, Drums, Marching Percussion, Piano, Marimba/Vibraphone.

Nice, what are the hours / requirements like when you're on the ship?

I don't have all the details yet, but it's usually at least a couple shows every day, with rehearsals for each one. I've heard very mixed opinions about cruise gigs, but my friends have been on the exact ship I'll be on and said they had a blast.

I've played Piano since I was a little - Chopin, Brahms, Debussy, few others and a few ragtimes. I wanna play jazz improve, just never learned how. That would be awesome :-)
