If you don't mind me asking, how did you land the gig? How long have you been playing? What is the deal / arrangement like / pay etc..?
Been playing 10 years now. I have a couple friends who have played on ships. One of them has been a musical director for a few years, so he put me in touch with a guy who does auditions for Celebrity Cruises.
Almost every gig I've ever gotten has been through connections. It's all about building your reputation as the guy who shows up on time, is well prepared, returns calls/emails, etc. I can't count the number of times people have told me about the slew of unreliable flaky musicians out there who are a pain in the ass to work with, and how much they appreciate a guy who has his shit together. Recommendations are everything. Also, don't just be a decent player; be the fucking man.
As for pay, well let's just say I got into internet marketing so that I can keep being a musician.
