After 25+ years of drinking Dr Pepper every single day, I've decided to cut out high fructose corn syrup from my diet all together, and let me tell you, it's not easy.

So now I need a replacement that is actually good (or not completely bad) for me. With the exception of water and juice, I really don't drink anything else (I hate coffee). I almost broke down earlier today, but found a bunch of teas in my girlfriend's kitchen. I've never really been a big tea drinker either, but I tried some Earl Grey tea and it was pretty damned good. So that got me thinking... what kind of other teas might there be that I would like?

My search for some good tea brought me to Adagio.com, but there are so many different varieties that I have no idea what to try.

So, does anyone have any recommendations? Some of those teas are pretty expensive and I don't want to buy something I'll hate... I like sweet things, nothing bitter (no lemon!) and something that tastes good hot or cold.

Early Grey is my favorite too.
I was in Bali last summer and had some ginger tea. I tell you, it was the best tea I ever had and nothing ever came close. Fresh ginger cut in pieces in hot water, nothing more. I tried to recreate it at home, but it just wasn't the same.

I like Darjeeling, but the Sri Lankan black teas are my favorite... I usually drink 3-5 cups of strong black tea a day...

I buy my tea at Meijers (the grocery store), they have a few decent teas there for fairly cheap prices... try to stick with whole leaf teas is possible, as the ground leaf teas taste like ass IMO...

as for sweet stuff, I don't like adding crap to my tea... I usually eat cookies or have chocolates with my tea, the slightly bitter tea is awesome with some sweet stuff...

congrats on the choice to go off sodas, your body will thank you... different people dig different teas, I'd say just try a few and find one you really like...

I love Earl Grey. It's a wonderful after dinner tea.

I drink a lot of green tea. If you look for real Chinese green tea, you can usually buy it very cheaply.

I also have a weakness for Chai. The Ethiopians make a kind of spiced milk tea that is not as sweet, but it's really nice on the palate after some Doro Wat and Injera.

Well you already tried my favorite tea and liked it. Now Lemon Lipton or Nestle will make you SPEW if you drink it. LOL!!

I steep my own Earl Grey the old fashioned way with just boiling water poured in a beer stein on two bags. While the water is still steaming I add a little sugar and some organic raw honey. Stir it up and let it sit for about 15 minutes, remove the tea bags and it's good to go.

I've got some BIGELOW sampler boxes in the pantry, but those "Fruity Flavors" just don't sound appealing so I haven't even tried them yet. I just pulled the box down and now see that there is a cinnamon spice in there. I might have to give that a try. Thanks for the post so that I could find this.

Yeah, I kicked the Mt.Dew habit about a year ago. Had a two 2 ltr bottle a day habit. I backslide once in a while, and it's so damn sweet now that I can't finish even a half glass at one time.

Sincerely,

MT

There are so many varieties so the only way is to try a bunch of them and see what you like.

Personally I like sencha green tea but most of the green teas are nice.

If you like sweet things, mint tea with a little sugar is delicious.

I had a diet pepsi problem by the way. Two big bottles a day was typical.

I quit about 7 months ago. Now I drink coffee, green tea and water almost exclusively.

Canna-bliss tea? Think I had that in A'dam before.

Cinnamon Chai is definitely a nice tea but there must be lots of sugar in it.

It's about as healthy as tea possibly gets... how many teas can you say that you're actually drinking the leaves too?

+1 matcha is great stuff. Matcha smoothies are great too

+ 1 Oolong hairy crab

Note: be prepared to pay the price. This stuff is high margin for the sellers just like premium coffees...

My favorite is English Breakfast tea, a strong tea used it England that is sweetened and served white (with milk or cream). This tea happens to have a lot of caffeine, more than some lighter teas.

I don't particularly like Earl Grey which tastes weird to me. Trivia: this tea is flavored with hibiscus to give it the unusual flavor.

When in Chinatown, I buy green tea for $1 for a large box, so I'm pretty amazed at the markup on those green tea offers.

I pretty much never drink soda, instead opting for water/coffee/tea.

I usually get the family sized liptons bags when making sweet tea. Just boil two bags in a pot of water, add a couple cups of sugar, then add cold water to bring it up to a gallon when making my sweet tea.

I drink Twinings brand green tea. 50ct Boxes

I set up a subscription on Amazon for my green tea because I drink it in bulk, so every month I get 6-50ct. boxes shipped to me. It costs me like $25/month and if I'm out of town or something I can just cancel that months order.

I don't drink hot tea though. What I do is get about 2 liters of hot water and put it in a jug. Then I put 8 tea bags in the jug and put it in the fridge to let it brew overnight. When I wake up, I squeeze the life out of the bags to get every last drop of tea and then I drink iced green tea for throughout the morning.

Sweet, but not too sweet, and great hot OR cold - Celestial Seasonings' Zingers line. They even come in these little packets made for mixing into a 20 oz. bottle of water, so good for on the go.

When I drink tea I tend to drink this stuff.

Snow Buds (Xue Ya), Organic White Tea - Rishi-Tea

There are so many good teas though. Just buy a sampler pack and start trying them out. You'll find one's you like in no time.

And about those sodas... I dropped 15 pounds just like that when I stopped drinking all those damn cokes.

I still get a hankering for them every once in a while, but 1 every week or 2 is way better than 3 - 5 a day.
