All I have to view my traffic and stats is awstats, which only updates once a day...

is there any better ways to get live stats of traffic?>

google analytics.
MyBlogLog stats.
Crazyegg.com heatmaps for usability/landing page optimization.

What exactly do you want to measure? uniques? page views? geo origin? URL origination? URLs viewed while on site? exit URL?

Statcounter.com achieves this an is free but only maintains 500 page loads at that price. It also monitors keyword searches that land on your site. I like it but then it is what I am accustomed to, it is also real time stats.

+1 for statcounter. Although they do force you to backlink to them now.

You can install invisible code. Not real sure how that is a back link. Nowhere for a user to click to them. Is it considered a backlink when it is all invisible? Not a smart ass question just a question in search of knowledge.

See if you can update your stats by adding &update=1 at the end of your awstats panel, it will update your stats right then

actually scratch that, it doesn't look like there is a link. They don't have an option to link to them, but it isn't there anymore so I assumed they were just linking back, but they aren't.

they don't force you to link back, there's the option to use a button or an invisible counter, and as far as can I remember it's been this way for more than 2 years

You are correct, but they used to ask you if you wanted to link back to statcounter, which I don't see anymore.

thanks for the input everyone, im just looking to test out different self promotions...

like, im going to put a link in a popular chat room and see (live) how many people click on it. etc

Awstats is a log stats program that is inaccurate. It's definately best to have an alternative stats program than that. I would suggest Analytics, but if you don't like the fact they are everywhere on the web and think they own everything, lol. Then maybe you will want to try another program like statcounter.
