What are your visions for the internet and web in 5 years time?

I'm hoping for truely globally portable web devices that allow me to be anywhere in the world and be on the net - at good prices.

Free web access. Certain metro areas are already working towards it (San Fran) and I think itll be something more and more metro areas begin working towards.

That and google ruling us all.

Another thing I'd love to see - being from Australia and all, is Aussies having the same levels of bandwidth at the same prices the US does.

For example to host a web site in Australia on an Australian server often costs2 - 3 times more than it would to host it in the US and you get about 1/3 the bandwodth to use.

More interactive. More big flashy stuff, more multimedia, more ajax stuff - everything will be bigger a better, mainly cos of everyone will have faster net.

Most of the software we use today will be available online.

More open source software will be in use than ever before.

Quad core processors will be considered "low-range", the entusiasts will be using 8-core and 12-core processors.

America will have $24 trillion of debt.

1 month? damn. i thought it was bad enough having to wait 5 working days for a US cheque to be cleared then having the bank charge me $15 to transfer from USD to AUD.

1 month + $10 fee..
128 kbps = $50/month

how bad you want it ? :D
It's hard to be me.. so be grateful eh' ;)

Why don't you make the deposits into an American bank, an online bank like ING, and then transfer funds only when you really need it. And since ING gives you around 4.25% anually, you'll be making money instead of losing it.

At some point I would still have to transfer from the American bank to Australia and US currency isn't legal tender here so I'd still be up for the fee.

I've looked into an American bank before and since 9/11 it's next to impossible for non US people to open accounts there.

Google have recently opened an office in Australia and are now offering to pay directly into Australian bank accounts in Australian currency. I've applied for that and am waiting for all the safety checks google does to go through. Hopefully my next adsense deposit will be direct to the bank account.

I'm really just looking forward to more big companies spending more of their advertising budgets on online ads.

Yeah, no kidding. Can you imagine how much money there will be to be made once companies spend as much on the internet as they do TV/radio/newspapers?

To a certain extent, but companies will always want to have a presence on web properties that they don't own.
