I am new to dedicated servers, but from what I read from the forums here and checking out the site, The Planet seems decent. I would like to know more about your experiences with them. I need it to host multiple sites and multiple domains. Basically many small sites for my clients.

Never used them. But this site is hosted on it's on server on The Planet. Jon raves about them all the time.

I've got 2 servers with servermatrix (the planet).
I did have a HD failure last october, and had to start from scratch. They had a new drive with a fresh OS install in quickly. I had no backups, which is entirely my fault. Make sure you backup!
Support is fairly quick to respond. I'm a fairly low maintenance customer anyway, as I do most of the stuff myself. I'm not sure how they'd go with high needs customer support. I'd assume alright.

I know how to use cpanel functions but will need help when it comes to debugging or installing softwares (not scripts for sites, but actual software onto the server), can they 'theplanet' provide such service. I looked into softlayer, they are not managed, so thats no good for me.

The Planet isn't managed either.

Yea Rob, thanks, I actually called them after posting. Ok how about liquidweb.com .. are they any good, their webmaster series plan seems like a good managed plan at a very competitive rate. I am liking the 100% uptime guarantee

Does anyone know of a good guide to dedicated servers? I have a lot of questions, not really sure where to look.

LiquidWeb is very good and I really haven't heard anything negative around them. They've been around a long time.

I suggest going to www.webhostingtalk.com -there's a dedicated server section. You can do a search and find reviews on them and other companies as well.

Softlayer.com is very good, I agree. If you want it fully managed, sign up with platinumservermanagement.com ...cheap and very good!

We're getting a server with them - but I've heard nothing but the best reviews for their service (I would hope so after looking at their prices).

But make sure you do your research and homework and make sure that they are able to cater to your needs, and that they have everything that you're after.
