What makes Texas attractive is that it hasn't had a state income tax in decades, it has it's own power gird, and because of the vast amount of land real estate (both private and commercial) is super cheap. That cheap private real estate also means that wages can be much lower than they would in states that are limited by the sea such as NY,FL,CA. In terms of the overall economy Houston is the world's 6th biggest port, DFW airport is one of the world's busiest airports, we export nearly 20 million heads of cattle, about half that many pigs and lead the nation of exports in cotton, cereal crop, and watermelon.
We're also one of the handful states that actually benefited from the NAFTA trade agreement and if Perry hadn't been shot down the 5 times he tried that NAFTA super highway in Texas probably would have helped us even more but thats at the expense of states like OH and PA which are losing factory jobs. Factor in the fact that of all the jobs created in Texas that the media keeps talking about, 1/3 were government jobs and then 1/2 of those credited to the private sector actually went to public schools, all the energy, oil, tech, and defense companies which have all been surging for the past decade and you have an environment where any generic governor could come out looking like they held all the answers to our economic problems.
Perry is a good guy but there really isn't one thing that you can point to and say "he did this and that boosted the economy". If you're voting for him with the hopes that he would repair the national economy then you're just getting your hopes up because Texas is a very unique state for business and you're not going to be able to take that model and then scale it to the national level.

My opinion: Most of you Yanks need to spend more time in Europe or in certain Asian countries to truly appreciate the depth of shittiness that most citizens of the world, have to put with, regarding their politicians.

If all the psycho leftwing nuts have is that RP is a Christian, they're in disastrous shape. Word on the streets is they consider Perry one of the biggest threats. Ron Paul, Pawlenty, Newt, Santorum et al have no chance. Perry and Bachmann are the only ones who do, plus Palin if she gets in.

Yeah - let's look at his record. He's been running Texas which is in a unique position with Nafta. But he's still managed to raise taxes several times and Texas has a huge debt ratio to it's GDP.

Eradicating jobs? If you want the spending cuts the republicans keep shouting about, there's going to be some serious job losses. Stop pumping trillions of dollars in government contracts into the economy and people are going to lose jobs. I dunno on what planet you can stop spending and create jobs, but it isn't Earth.
What do you call shutting down the Gulf and Alaska for drilling, you retard? And obviously there would be a 10% contraction in GDP if the feds balanced the budget, that's because real jobs aren't created in the public sector, they're created in the PRIVATE SECTOR.

I'm not defending Obama or getting on one side or the other. I am sick of that debate, it serves no purpose other than satiate people's ego for a moment in time where they can go, "whew, I'm on the winning team for a bit, RIGHT ON". Right now, and for the last 10 years, WE ARE ALL LOSING.
The real debate should be how exactly do the needs of the people get put to the forefront of our government instead of all these special interest, lobbyists, corporate interests.
The government needs a serious reboot. Watched Bachman on TV this morning reacting to her victory. You know how many questions she answered directly - zero. All her answers were sound bite ready, non-committal and "look what I did, it wasn't effective, but I did something".
