I got a well elucidated article on the review I asked for. To the point and well distinguished. Not the best for article submissions, but definitely the best for those that need an informal blog written. The content was flawless apart from two grammar mistakes I could identify and the best deal was that the conclusion just fitted in absolutely well. I’ve seen plenty of writers make up stuff on the top of their heads and press it into their keyboards but this guy didn’t do that. +Rep for listening mate. Keep up the work and I wish you all the best here on WF.

'Social Media' seems to be the latest buzzword in marketing circles these days, but the expression itself is really an umbrella term that includes several different forms of media that reach out to and connect people.

For example: Where Wikipedia.org is an example of a website that falls under the category of social media so does myspace.com and mag.nolia even though the latter are totally and completely different in nature compared to the former.

So, is there really any one single answer to the question, what is Social Media? Well fortunately, there is and the only practical way to do that is to break it down into its constituents; Social and Media. Social refers to society and media translates into a means of communication with the masses. Thus, in essence, Social Media means a form of media that communicates information and interacts with the masses via the various networks and channels of modern society.

So, how is it different from Media in general?

There’s perhaps one major characteristic of social media that clearly distinguishes it from the traditional definition of media. Regular Media, in general, has always been akin to a one-way street. For example, people could always listen to the radio, watch Television or read the newspaper but when it came to providing feedback or interacting with broadcasters or publishers, their options were mostly, for lack of a better word – ‘limited’.

On the other hand, the inherent nature of social media now provides consumers far greater opportunities to share information/ feedback not just with publishers but with each other as well!

And when described in Web 2.0 terms, social media would usually denote a website which doesn’t just simply impart information, but also gives the audience or readers a chance to interact in return. And while this interaction may be as plain as simply requesting readers to vote on a particular topic or asking for their comments on an article, it may in other cases be as complicated recommending product or activities to people based on their preferences and that of others with parallel interests…

In conclusion, like it or hate it but from the looks of things, social media and social media marketing is here to stay. And for those who’re yet to get on to the whole social media bandwagon, give it a try and you’ll discover a whole new world of entertainment, you never knew before!
