The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.

Catholic Charities the church's social services arm, is one of dozens of nonprofit organizations that partner with the District. It serves 68,000 people in the city, including the one-third of Washington's homeless people who go to city-owned shelters managed by the church.

"All of those services will be adversely impacted if the exemption language remains so narrow," Jane G. Belford, chancellor of the Washington Archdiocese, wrote to the council this week.

Under the bill, headed for a D.C. Council vote next month, religious organizations would not be required to perform or make space available for same-sex weddings. But they would have to obey city laws prohibiting discrimination against gay men and lesbians.

I think leaving this out is biased imo.

That article is so full of holes in fact and logic it makes a person's brain bleed.

Religon was the first affiliate marketing product ever promoted, don't hate.

Yeah just think about how much Berries Jesus could have sold. He got people to sign up for a life long rebill by pretending there was a dude in the sky.

Every single person on earth would be eating Acai had someone shown him Flogs...

Flip side of this is the Catholic church has subsidized social services in DC and you can't really expect it to help people do things that go against it's religious belief system.

I wonder if they will deny services to shellfish eaters too...

See here is where the problem is. Because they wont accept gays they are going to be wiling to deny food, shelter, and other services to 68,000 people? This seems like one of them WWJD moments, and they have failed.

Wow this is going to bite them in the ass hardcore. You see, American's just don't like being told what to do and they certainly don't take kindly to being coerced. The way this country has been going with it's anti-gay rights, they could have just let it be and nothing would have come of it. Now, though, I bet they just sealed the deal. They just martyred the Gay rights movement.

Do the athiest that are probably crying the most about this see the hypocricy? Athiest (wana be athiest anyways) blast the church, call them ignorant, stupid, etc. but then get pissed when the church won't spend thier money to feed people.

Same hypocricy you see from athiest, gays, the left. Take Huffpost for example. They rant up and down that Fox news i'snt a real news organization, yet they site news post after news post from Fox news.

Hey the last two times I've listened to NPR in my car, guess what they were talking about?

I was raised roman catholic and went to church from 1 to 20 and this stuff really pisses me off. The church feeds people and has social services because that's what its teachings are, they believe they are doing the work of god. No law or action by anyone/anything should make them stop their work.

But the fact that they even mention this means that they are considering anti-gay rights to be more important than doing god's work. It just shows how far from the path that the church has gone in its blindness, their ideals have become twisted and mangled once again. It further shows me why I stopped going to church to begin with.

To look at things from the other perspective for a moment, the church sees homosexuality as sin because well the bible plainly declares it sin. It doesn't declare it a "worse" sin like some homophobic Christians try to claim it just declares it sin like any other sin. The Catholic church wants to help people including those living in "sin"(I think everyone falls in this category), but you can't expect the church to enable people to do things it believes are wrong.

An example would be the church sponsoring an AA meeting, because it helps people struggling with alcoholism overcome their addiction but they can't support a lesbian support group because the purpose of the group isn't to overcome their "sin" but for support of their "sinful" choice. The difference is subtle for people that don't see the world from the same perspective as the church does, but it makes a huge difference to members of the church.

From my understanding this law would force the Catholic church to either work with the City and support things they see as immoral or not work with the city at all. I highly doubt the Catholic church is going to stop doing social services they will just continue to do them on their own terms apart from the city.
