Like your research has suggested, it's not very cost effective to slap together a large amount of AA batteries to power a car with. It's just not optimal, and the car will either suffer in runtime or torque or something important to our concept of what a car should do.
If, however, the Auto industry were freely allowed to scale up batteries to car-sized (which the did way back in the 80's with the GM EV-1) then we'd have an easier time transitioning off oil. You can thank the Petrodollar for that recall, I have no doubt at all.
We're finally starting to see progress in batteries again with the Nissan Leaf and some Tesla models. But just in cars... Do you know where the Real consumer market would be for large-scale batteries? The home, of course.
If houses had large batteries we'd be so much better off; we'd be able to generate and store energy on the spot, we could live independently from the grid, we'd have a 24/7 UPS for the entire house effortlessly... It would be far more ideal that stupidly depending on a power grid that can fail and turn your neighborhood into a post-apocalyptic warzone through no fault of your own... But of course the Oil companies wouldn't like you to do that, would they?
Larger-sized battery production has been targeted specifically, for literally a century now, by the oil industry as a major threat.
In fact, the first automobiles were all battery-powered cars, and not until Henry Ford (the automobile industry's first lobbyist) went to Washington and teamed up with the oil tycoons there were we stuck in this current problematic state.
