+rep on Dream Theatre, that was awsome

Led Zeppelin...greatest rock band EVAR

I just recently switched my favorite genre of music to "melodic death metal"

It's exactly what it describes and is actually quite badass if you give it a fair enough shot. In fact In Flames is melodic death metal and is from the same town in sweden that pretty much all melodeath bands are from, which isn't a lot.

nice one, but in the last couple of years I've made the switch from melodic death metal to metalcore and a bit of deathcore.
Still love In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Soilwork, At the Gates, Carcass, Opeth, Children of Bodom, The Haunted

but now more Neaera (now playing), Maroon, As I Lay Dying, HEAVEN SHALL BURN, Still Remains, August Burns Red, Caliban, Bring Me the Horizon, I Killed the Prom Queen, Parkway Drive, The Black Dahlia Murder..

and good old Lamb of God \m/

besides all that, TOOL. And a lot of weird Psytrance noone would have heard of - Simon Posford (Shpongle, Hallucinogen), Juno Reactor, The Delta..

and a completely different tip - Bassnectar. finally something different after all those years! fucking Burning Man

fuck too much music has effected me in so many ways over the years, I could go on for pages, its an obsession

cant stop thinking...

Slipknot. Gay as it seems now they dragged me from Will Smith right into metal and eventually into rock and blues.

Eli, if you like melodic death I assume you've listened to At The Gates? They defined the genre. If you haven't already get Slaughter of the Soul, imo the best metal album of the 90s.

same here. They dragged me from Eminem/Jay-z/top 40 crap into stuff that radio won't play.

Slipknot -> Korn -> RATM -> SOAD -> Slayer -> Lamb of God -> dillinger escape plan -> APC -> TOOL. It was a long journey

No offence to you Eskil but I'm not sure bout Dream Theater, I mean what's with the freemasonry/Illuminati/NWO references in their videos and music?Blatant new world order and freemason references, I dunno, just another bunch of freemason/illuminati puppets?

What's your take?
But yeah they do sound pretty awesome nonetheless.

To be honest, the song you're talking about (Rite of Passage) is my least favorite DT song ever and I agree the lyrical topic is not interesting (nor typical at all for what they usually write about). I frankly don't like it either and I think it's on the album only to have a "radio-friendly" single for the record company.

As far as them being freemason/illuminati/new world order puppets....Lol, far from it! Those lyrics are cheesy and it's a filler song that IMO has nothing to do with what Dream Theater stands for.

These are some I should have posted:

That first Dream Theater song above I cant listen to for 7.5 minutes. Awful, boring, muddy vocals, repetitious studio music.

Muddy vocals?? Perhaps it's time to clean your speakers.. ;) The vocals are crystal-clear and James LaBrie has arguably one of the best studio voices in the genre.

If you think it's boring: that video I embedded was from a calmer PART within an 18-minute epic song. The song is based on true events and goes through heavier parts, fast riffs, and many different time changes and moods. I just included it to show that they are capable of writing really beautiful melodies as well as heavy metal (within one song!)

If they have all those emotions for you... and they seem to be new world order doesnt that cause some concern for you?
Haha.... seem to be new world order?? You're basing that off of the lyrics that were posted above. Like I have said already: Dream Theater are NOT conspiracy-theory idiots/new-world-order freaks or anything of the sort. That is just one song off the new album that was released to be a single, and is as far away lyrically from their other material as possible.

I can think of a million better bands. Some are:
Nirvana
Stone Temple Pilots
Pearl Jam
White Stripes
System of a Down.
Outkast

1) This thread is not about listing all our favorite bands. If it was I would have listed tons more too.
2) The thread IS about the ONE band that made a difference in your life.

Sure, Pearl Jam is a good band with some good songs. Did Nirvana or Outkast change your world? Talk about awful and boring - and hardly inspirational. :)

Public Enemy.

I never "got" the fucking hair bands from the 80's (GnR excluded), and when PE hit everything made sense finally. Of course, rap went on to be destroyed by MTV, and I have long since moved on to other genre's but in the late 80's of my youth it was the purest form of music out.

Rodrigo y Gabriela. As a primarily acoustic/classical guitarist these guys absolutely blow my mind. Big inspiration.

Seeing Black Flag on the "Slip It In" tour in 1984, with Saccharine Trust opening. Mind blowing, and changed everything for me. Nothing like that LP before or since.

btw i will go to see TOOL live for the first time, Hopefully it is not raining....

first time I saw them was at lollapalooza in 1996. They played their then unreleased aenema music video on huge screens behind themselves. It was great.

They put on an awesome show.
