Thailand coup

There's a place about an hour away from where I live in the U.S. I normally just drive through, but I've stopped for fuel many times. Someone got shot there last year, part of some drug/robbery mess.

While I technically may run a 50% greater chance of being murdered because I am in the U.S. rather than Turkey, I think a lot more about chainsaw accidents than I do murder.

Statistics can be funny that way.

Yeah, real scary. Only inconvenience is that the cartoon channel is blocked.

This 'selfies with soldiers' thing is hilarious. The soldiers are posing for the images instead of taking away cameras or even killing people like they'd do here in the states. It's almost a joke over there, nobody's getting hurt, (that I can see from here) and everyone seems civilized about the coup.

Could you imagine if the US Army tried to storm capitol hill and disband the senate, removing Obomba and all politicians from DC?

No, I can't either. But I could imagine millions of americans dying over far smaller crap in the meantime, say like liberals trying to pass gun control bills or repugnicans launching a holy assault against gay churches and abortion clinics.

Really?

You have an interesting viewpoint of the world. Perhaps you were a bit too excited about using improvised words to evaluate whether your thoughts make sense. None of that is going to happen, but I appreciate your desire to share your daydreams.

You don't view this place as a powder keg waiting to explode? Granted, I'm in the middle of bumfuck nowhere too, so I highly doubt any of this will affect my little 5km radius world, but that doesn't mean it's not going to happen. Don't you remember 2010?

It's the same battle being fought now. Only difference is, people are more pissed off and organized now, both sides are pissed off instead of just the reds, there wasn't a military coup last time, etc. Maybe I'm just pessimistic, but I think this is going to get worse before it gets better.

Are you planning on leaving, or are you gonna sit it out?

edit: never mind, saw your thread.

I was here for the last coup in 2006. Pretty much the same routine: selfies with the soldiers, kids climbing around on the tank parked on their corner. Have not yet seen the coyote dancers entertaining soldiers in the streets like last time but we can hope.

I was here in 2010 too when the red shirts barracaded central Bangkok and burned the huge mall. There was no military coup that time, just a big mob that was allowed to rampage until the military was called in to disperse it.

Each time there is a coup or something like 2010 nothing gets solved. The rival groups just go underground until the next round. Unlike other places in the world, none of these groups have the backing of the US secret government with the arms and money needed to mount a serious threat to the Thai army. So they are only allowed to rampage to a limited extent and then made to pack up and go home.

As for a powder keg ready to explode? Not really, not like an all out civil war. I'm expecting to see a continuation of the petty attacks that have been going on for the last six months in Bangkok, although the targets are dispersed now so there might not even be much of that.

aren't the pasty white men who move to Thailand used to being controlled betas already? Woman, govt, no difference.

Yes, really.

Did you know that despite the 1st amendment, cops destroy hundreds of cameras every single month in the USSA? They really hate being filmed, and are pretty much completely safe from prosecution for the most vile, obvious murders if the video of it doesn't get out to youtube.

Luckily for you, every day we see more & more people not afraid to film them. Try spending a day or two catching up to vast, VAST world of videos of cops being cops in 'merica... It might save your life one day.

Here's a couple of the hundreds of links I could show you to get you started:

Fact: You are 8 Times more likely to die from police officer than by terrorist attack. And you're paying heavy taxes in order to fund those odds. Good luck bro.

Alright, millions would be quite a stretch under current conditions; but I can't imagine current conditions lasting for long. Check out what's happening in North Carolina right now with gun rights:

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Launches “Operation Ceasefire” To Visit 18,000 Homes | Ben Swann Truth In Media

18,000 isn't a bad start... Wait until they scale that up a bit... I may be right yet.

Luke, of course you know there are a lot of differences between the U.S. and Thailand. Like the idea of a coup; it is bizarre to Americans but it is routine in Thailand. Every power center in Thailand spends all its efforts on self enrichment as it loots the country. But when one gets too big the army slaps them down and we start a new game. If only there were such a reset mechanism in the U.S., eh?

The Thais who are directly involved or decide to get involved can end up hurting or dead. The vast majority go about their business and not much changes. Today I drove into Bangkok from Pak Chong. One army checkpoint at Wang Noi caused minor traffic slowing. Saw soldiers stationed at the toll booths on the outer ring road and at the Lam Lukka exit. The Fashion Island mall was packed as always. News says a few hundred anti-coup protesters scuffled with soldiers at Victory Monument and I guess one got arrested. Pretty light-handed given that the army said don't protest or else.

TV stations aren't carrying any of the news but it is all over social media with up to the minute photos and first hand accounts - MSM is so dead.

hope you get out ok Matt.

How many family pets and grumpy grandpas were shot in America today in the name of the drug war? I think I'll take my chances over here. Besides I found a new lunch spot at the mall that was great. And good lord the girls at all the booths on the IT floor were giving me the eye today - must be the new hairdo. lulz

They blocked Facebook bros

Only lasted for 30 minutes yesterday. Clear warning to Facebook that they either cooperate or get blocked permanently.

Overnight a bunch of accounts of Thai political activists were removed. So FB caved and is cooperating with the junta. Poor form Zuck.
