I picked up a 7D with lot's of toys to boost the experience including some lenses and filters...

Wondering if anyone here shoots 1080 or has the workflow down pat for best results with this cam?

Shooting 1080 with a DSLR is all the rage re DOF and slow mo when shooting 60FPS and processing it properly so since my studio is getting cluttered with cams for each use and lens type (video + photo + quick sot cams..), I consolidated it all to just use this, after my first day and knowing I'm late to the game I'm still mega fucking impressed.

Cinematically this footage has tons of fuckups but I'm just experimenting with the settings and trying hard to practice focusing while in motion manually (follow focus) - shit is hard with a narrow DOF.

Other shit incase anyone is thinking about getting into this DSLR 1080vid setup: The source files tend to come as native .mov files and are hard to work with. Many convert them first before bringing into your 1080 setup in your editor. For this test I didn't, just wanted to see how my machine handles the raw files and it's not toooo bad + I want to preserve as much quality as possible. Then exported to 1080 as an .avi, then converted to .wmv (turning a 5gig file into a 400mb file at 6min) at higheset quality.

*Shoutout to LY2 - I did end up getting this Bengal shortly after seeing his winter cat pic and I PM'ed him about them - fucking awesome cats.

Anyway - TLDR; my cat vid at 1080 with lot's of DOF testing lot's of settings and shit:

Press play then switch to 720 or 1080:

Youtube/vimeo have some of the sickes vids I've seen and quite a few tv shows/feature films are now using these to get the cinematic feel for much less (I was looking at the new RED - 10K but it's not THAT much better imo).

Good to see another camera guy here. Is it the Mark II?? I never really read up on the Canons; I went from d3k; d90 to now the D7000.

So here's what I'm using.
Nikon D7000; with Tokina 12-24mm lens

I have several other lenses, but thats my primary. I use it mostly for underwater using an ikelite housing. It's weird that someone would take a $2,000 camera in an underwater housing $1,500; strobes ($2,000) ports $500+, in addition to several other things. But yeah, I guess I like taking pictures of fucking fish, whales and sharks and shit. I picked the d 7000 because it has the auto-focus when taking HD Movies (something that cannot be adjusted underwater by hand). Does that auto focus? I know most dslr's didnt which is why I upgraded from the d90 to the d7000.

Forgive spelling, tired as shit and took am ambien. gigeedy.

I did not read one word of your post, but your cat is very boss.

Thx.

Is that a savannah? (oh, and cool camera ;))

He's a spotted Bengal - currently 3 months old.

lol @ the fluffy tails and backs...they do that shit all the time

Dude you should have warned me about how crazy they are :). For those that don't know - Bengals are 4th generation wild (so they breed them with a wild cat, wait 4 generations (sometimes 3 or 5) to acquire domestic traits so it's not too skitzo). This one gets super skitz I love it.

i want to make love to your camera

Heh, lovin' it too fam the depth of field is retardoid, too much at times but absolutely amazing manual effect.

Dude - I'm super jealous, I would LOVE to shoot 1080 underwater! In fact I'm putting that on my checklist within the next few years. This is the Canon 7D, I just gave up my Nikon D3000 and switched back to Canon after leaving them for a few years (not sure why, just at future shop one day thinking 'hmm i could use a new cam' and they didn't have any rebel/canon bodies so I tried Nikon ((I hate the way Nikon handles low light))). The 7000 is the closest in comparison to the D7 and you see a lot of d7 vs 7000 youtube vids doing comparisons...

I don't have auto focus and I'll admit the follow focus using manual hands is hard as seen in the vid of me trying to follow the kitten long and short - testing my skills..

I have a F2.8 EF 70-200m IS 2 USM and a Tamron 17-50m for daily stuff, thinking of getting a few more (the lens is more expensive than everything else put together - $2700ish).

I also got hi-end protectors, a joby tripid to act as a homemade rig on my chest with the cam strap around my neck (works fairly well), double grip/battery addon, filters, rode mic, ring light, a few other things can't remember right now..

Beautiful cat dude you have !

How much did you paid for your whole package ?

Cheers

Thx! Everything in the list above was just a bit over $6,000, and it's a mid level setup but as the saying goes - "don't judge a man by his tools" - you can get amazing quality if you know what you're doing and if you get those manual settings down properly before you shoot.

Is this just a serious hobby or are you/looking to/ make money as a photographer/video guy? Just curious.

I have a Ti1 that I shoot 1080 with. I'm able to bring in the .mov files into premier and of course final cut pro on a Mac. I see some of your shots are really warm in color under certain lighting conditions. I have the same issue with my canon.
I like the dof

Been doing audio/video/photo for a dozen as kinda both a hobby and for commercial use. Have done a handful of broadcast pieces but I don't see myself doing much commercial stuff for others with this.

I'm thinking of taking off for x months somewhere and doing a documentary of 'something' on a pro level. After so many years of fucking with graphics/audio/vid, this is a cool natural progression for me to now compile it all into something wicked. Plus all my old gear should have been replaced properly a few years ago but it's hard to let go of big investments even in the film/photo world.

Only thing I have problems with is creating orchestral for scoring - I can - it's just not on a pro level for long build ups like the above. And even though I can make beats all day that are top shelf, REAL orchestral shit eludes me even with some sick piano skills. I think I read somewhere you're getting into orchestral - if so mate I'd recommend it it's powerful and popular (i grabbed this off audiojungle).

Yep I brought the .mov's into premiere pro at full size and I get a lil' glitchy after xx minutes so have to restart PP, not a big deal and I don't want to convert them first to lose any quality...

The Ti1 looked sick at the store too and the vimeo examples are amazing. Using the Rebel for many years during a photo/video dvd tour we did at clubs/carshows/etc. I just got really used to Canon, and used to use a Sony DSR series for my vids but this does better in both fronts in one device. Only thing left for me is some rigging gear and a tascam audio recorder so you can listen while you shoot and have your audio being picked up from far away while you shoot/zoom. Nice having separate audio files but a bit of a bitch too.

The warming effect in frlscnt light is quite shite - I got a ring lite and it REALLY helps. Notice the VERY LAST few clips, it goes from the yellow to the ring lite when he's about to fall asleep. It's the same shot just the light is on in the latter one - quite amazing and I think it was about $150 or you can make your own if you're crafty for less. The pro lights do bring out some amazing colors though. Sometimes the warming is really cool too but sucks as a default I agree.

The floor seems too smooth for the cat... I like watching pets play and watched almost the whole thing. Cute..
You could remove the out of focus shots at many places (Around 3.05 etc)...

Well, thanks for your reply, your stuff is very expensive but well you seems to know how to use the stuff as well ;)

As you said "don't judge a man by his tools"
