What's the stupidest mistake you've seen an online business do?

I made this thread because I really don't know of many. To that effect, the stupidest one I know of is SitePoint 'firing' Chris Beasley (Aspen)

The thing about online business mistakes is that failure simply means your marketing didn't work. It's easy enough to try something else.

That's why I always regard failure as a learning experience - it's especially true online.

friends != business partner :)

Yep. This has been my biggest business mistake ever.. Twice in fact! I lost over $12k from two ventures, and from both, all I got were these shitty chairs, so I label them my $12k chairs, and don't let anyone sit in them. But I keep them in my office as a reminder to myself that next time you want to go into business with a friend.. DON'T DO IT. Money changes everything when friends are involved.

Sure, if your business relys on one time visitors. When you build a community a screw up can really poison the water.

Stupidest thing I've seen is AltaVista letting their SE turn to shit. They could have been a Google.

Really? I was actually talking to a friend about somewhat doing this together. We just seem like a pair that could do it well, share good/different skills.

Hmm...

Hey if Serg and Larry can do it, so can you!!

Who is Serg and Larry?

But yea... thats a pretty serious question, I'd like more insight on the subject.

If you do ever get to the point where you needed more help or wanted to take it to the step... who do you suggest actually getting? I always thought to myself if I got to that point I would choose friends.

The founders of google.

There are plenty of friends who go into business together and do well, there are always examples on either side.

Stupidest online business mistakes? Hmm, AOL-Time Warner merger? :)

The Google Duo...

I'm going into business with a friend, but i'm the one that knows how to do the web stuff, and he's the one with the great ideas - and i'm not the type of person to take the money and run, so i think it'll work out well.

Soon as I read the words I said "duh" to myself.

As you can tell by now, I'm not that great with names... not until I atleast meet a person face to face.

But will he take the money and run?! ;)

Just kidding... I'm going to go into business with a friend myself. I hope it works out well. Although we dont both know things about the web.

Why did they fire him?
To be honest, they never really said why. Chris seemed to believe it had something to do with a new employee they had.

Friends who are not net savvy but like the fact that YOU are making money and want to do the same and become your partner are BAD FOR BUSINESS!!

I hate when you tell a friend how much you make, then they tell you to "Hook them up" or make them something with your time that would earn them money, when with the same effort (or less) you could be making that money yourself.
