SSL security seals - do they actually improve conversions?

I've seen countless LPs (especially rebill LPs) with security seals (from BBB, McAfee, TRUSTe, etc) but they are never linked, so I'm guessing they are using it without any approval.

But I'm sure it will have some affect on a conversion rate of an offer as a lot of consumers associate such logos with the legitimacy of the company.

Few things, One they aren't linked because people click on the things, and linking them takes the user off your page and onto another.... Logically you'd want to keep them there and buying/entering info, instead of taking time and researching your company on another website.

It has been shown in a few studies (can't remember the exact links but they're posted around on A/B testing software like VisualWebsiteOptimzers blogs and such), where it shows it really depends on the site, so in the end you have to test between seals and placement. Obviously both will effect stuff.

You could negotiate a contract with these companies where you test and they only charge you for the test of the seal and will refund if it doesn't increase conversions. I would assume they'd let you because they're literally selling trust so their whole pitch is their mark increases your profits, so putting it to the test in a lower risk (for you) environment shouldn't be that hard to get if worded correctly.

For any credit card page, it is required to have an SSL- part of PCI Compliance. And yeah, definitely makes a difference in CVR. People trust it...

Yes. 100% guarantee, security logos, brand trademarks, all these things are very important to build authority, especially with anything requiring a payment, and even for leadgen they come in handy. This is as far as my split testing exp with landers. As far as the SPECIFIC SSL seal that you need a license for or something, I'm not sure about. I think your average consumer isn't gonna know the difference between some official licensed thing that you need an encrypted key to display and something that visually mimics it.

i was going to test this myself on my LPs, but its reasonably expensive. anyone want to share what results they've gotten from these

Yes. When I've tested it increased my conversions by around 2% - definitely worth it for me.
(Even on LPs only used as jump pages and didn't require much user info)
And even more if you fork out for an EV SSL.
The downside with EV is it lists your info publicly.

Another benefit is it can make blanking the referrer more secure (even a DMR can leak sometimes), and hiding your tracks easier.

Protip: SSLs can boost conversions on pages that don't require any sensitive info at all - especially on interruption marketing where the green bar of an EV seal can gain attention. And split test in security seals etc as well - I wouldn't recommend using trademarks like TrustGuard (unless you do wanna pay to get verified) but just the shape of a seal / crest etc is associated with security, and normally boosts conversions for me.

Yeah these stuff increases the CVR's significantly I actually test so many different ones, but i aim for like 2-5% increase more then my original CVR, but man it does make more monies, especially symantec and Mcafee, they are the most popular ones.

thanks, this is what i was looking for. i own the offer as well so i wonder if consistency in seals would help CVRs. will post back w/ results.

Has anyone ever thrown these up on a simple opt-in(squeeze) page? Something like 100% Safe Email etc.

I haven't but I have tried a lock with your information is 100% secure, this actually decreased conversions on my page. My theory is it raises privacy concerns and a simple email capture like that which outweighs the trust a non branded creative gives.

Here's a study from the University of Auckland on deception techniques used in phishing scams. They cover the significance of an SSL seal. Apparently only 18% of users in a sample could even identify an SSL seal, and security images on banking sites are actually training people to begin ignoring SSL seals.

Definitely a great read.

+rep - definitely a good read.

I use "security" seals on all my lp and checkout pages... have been doing it for years. I see pages without them, and I wonder how many sales/leads are lost without them..

I got a Truste seal on one of my newsletters. I split test the seal against no seal and saw about an 8% increase compared to no seal, as in 8% better not 8% more joins, so worth the $450 for that little bump.
