No it's fucking not. That's not even the reason people say to do it. If it was insecure to login as root then it's insecure to login with a user that has full sudo access. If I have the password to a sudo account I have root herp derp.
The whole "never login is as root, because it's always 100% bad" is fucking retarded and spawns from Ubuntu and the raise of the idiot "sysop" that would need a tutorial like you just posted.
sudo = making everyone's lives harder for absolutely no reason whatsoever, except to help make you look smart to people who don't work in the technical arena.
It's like when I get clients who tell me things like, "yeah, my server admin is a really bright guy, and is on the ball. he's got the server locked down pretty tight, and he uses sudo and everything", kinda thing...

SSH and stuff is great if you're very profecient at it, but I wouldn't recommend it if you don'r have experience running a server.
You can easily fuck things up, and then you're screwed because your host will not be able to help you unless you pay tooth and nail for yuor server like on liquidweb where you indirectly pay for support like that.
Uploadeding file by file is indeed a painstaking process, this is why I use the cpanel file manager to zip up files for me for lots of small files, and the download the zip file, you can do the same with uploads, you can upload a wordpress zip archive and inflate it in file manager.
Much better method for noobs because you don't have to learn command like language.
