My wife has completely overtaken my 15" Macbook Pro, and I am in the need for a good laptop under $500 so I can get some work done. All I need it for is stat checking, ftp, and basic photoshop/dreamweaver/web browsing.

So far I have this one as my number 1.

Anyone here recently bought a laptop they like?

Is the AMD C-Series Processor C-50 comparable to the new Intel® Core™ i3 Processor?

I got myself a Toshiba Satellite, which is often compared to Acer for their price. Mine has an Intel i5, 1tb HD, 4GB RAM -- out of the box.

It's by far superior to anything ACER has, particularly when it comes to dissipating heat. Also, the graphics are much clearer and the price? Under $500 before taxes (If you're in the states you can likely find a real bargain on an i7 equipped model.) Acer's are noisy and burn up quickly in my experience.

You should also consider that the model you're looking at only has a single-core, 1GB processor. There are much better deals out there.
 
or here's a wild thought, demand your wife go play farmville on a library computer (insist that she run there and back to kill 2 birds with 1 stone).
 
Brand New for under $500 ... No.

But I have had 2 Hp DV models and they are GREAT! Lots of ram, duel core processors, good battery life.

You can find them all day on ebay.

this. tell her to give you your laptop back and buy her a $200 netbook.

I bought this a couple months back on a whim from Best Buy. $500. Very nice specs for the price. Been good to me so far.

I'm not one to buy computers from stores but I have a soft spot for Gateway. Which makes no sense because they're run by acer now.

bought almost the exact same comp. and love it. Had a great discount and snapped it up for a great price. It doesn't look pretty or fart unicorn poop but it does the job and is always reliable and quick and steady like a German beer wench.
 
If you're serious about online marketing, a Macbook Pro is the only thing you should consider. It has the latest graphics, huge amounts of diskspace and memory as well as thunderbolt technology. No other laptop in the world uses thunderbolt; Apple are always at the forefront of tech.
