Like a lot of WF users I often go for the short term, quick cash landing page affiliate model which if done correctly can bring in some tasty cash. On the other hand I know that once the offer expires all my hard work will be worthless and it’s back to the drawing board to start again.

For long term returns you really can’t go wrong with a content site which over time will not only offer a solid return but like bricks and mortar property it will continue to gain value as it increases in popularity. In the last 10 years PPC, aff marketing etc has changed but you can always be sure a site filled with good content is a winner on the SERPS.

Many people see building a content site as a right pain in the ass but after your set up its really just a case of keeping the content fresh and the offers relevant.

To build a site I normally use:

Joomla – Open Source CMS
Joomla Shack – Cheap Templates
Open Ads – Geo Targeting Offers
Get Me Content - $250 a month writers (I know its a plug :)

I normally budget around $200 for design and basic seo with another $250 on content (split between 2 sites) .

I normally aim to earn a minimum $20 a day from Adsense Alone within 30 days of launch. I set the figure low as at the start I just want to recover costs and get feedback form the visitors on layouts etc.

Using Open Ads I set up targeted offers from different networks (mostly UK and US) based on where the visitor is from. This method alone has doubled the income of many of my sites over the last year or so.

After 3 months and getting good traffic (especially long tail search) I either decide to keep the site and develop it further or flip it for a profit ( An easy way to 10k )

The sites I keep I aim to earn minimum mid $x.xxx from whilst still spending very little in the way of advertising or promotion. If a site is doing really well I will spend more time promoting and tweaking until I feel it’s the best it can be.

If you follow this strategy then in a year’s time you could easy have a collection of sites worth 50 x what they cost to create and from then on it only gets easier and easier

Long term content sites are a good idea, but you can't focus on revenue until the site is alteast several months old because Google often doesn't properly rank a site until it leaves the sandbox. if you set an unrealistic goal of xx dollars after 30 days your setting yourself up for failure.

Also, don't get bagged down by the CMS. It isn't very important if your just launching a site. Your first priority is to just get some content and backlinks.

Yeah, I don't even put up ads the first few months (when I'm linkbuilding). People tend to link to you more often if the site is not advertisement heavy (common sense :)) (Not talking about blogs)
