I have a blog that has 10 posts in single niche. But my blog domain does not have keywords in its name. Unrelatedkeyword.com
However 1 of those 10 posts is on url Unrelatedkeyword.com/my-exact-keyword/
And I would prefer most of my visitors to land on that post because its most important selling post of the blog.

So where should I build links:
a) to Unrelatedkeyword.com anchored with my exact keyword (that keyword is spread at all 10 posts)
b) to that single post with url Unrelatedkeyword.com/my-exact-keyword/ anchored with my exact keyword
?

I would like to link to that single most important post but I am wondering do I lose much by not having the rest of 9 posts included. I mean if I link to the whole blog I am linking to a lot of content (10 posts worth of it) but if I am linking to that only post there is only 10% worth of content. So its way harder to rank with less content plus it means that those 9 posts are almost useless (except that their titles are seen in the sidebar of single post).

On the other hand - maybe having inurl keyword even helps me? I mean ranking with Unrelatedkeyword.com/my-exact-keyword/ is easier because it has keyword in url and its a plus in the eyes of google?

Can enyone point me which direction to choose and why?
Thanks

In order for your pages to rank for the keywords you want, build links with keyword rich anchor texts to the individual pages.

Deep links ftw!

I want to clarify something - I want to rank either for that single page or for the main index page where that post is number 1 anyway. So its not that I want to rank for that single page, its just that I don't mind if I don't rank for index page and rank for that single page instead.

So question is which is easier to rank:
Home page or that single page? When building links to home page I have advantage of having more keyword rich content (whole 10 posts) but have disadvantage of not having keyword in url. And when building links to that single page I have advantage of having exact keyword in url, but have disadvantage or having only 10% worth of content.
Question is which advantage is better?

build links to both and use a good mixture of keywords. sprinkle any leftover linking to the other 9 pages.

keyword as the page url is good but not as good as an exact match domain. I would think unrelated.com/yourkeyword would rank a little higher a little easier than unrelated.com by itself. But all the individual pages contribute to your top domains authority. So in my opinion, more bang for your buck is going to be a combo of top and deep links to all your pages, just give your two main pages an extra 20% or so links. and use a good mixture of keyword anchors (even for your main 2 pages that aren't your money phrase) so you dont get slapped for fucked up anchor densities.

Thanks for reply. But I am sort of reluctant to build links 50/50 to both main url and that subpage for the same keyword, because here is what I think:
(these numbers are random, just for principle illustration purposes):

Lets say it takes me 10 hours of link building work to get to the number 1 position. And with 5 hours of work I can get to number 5 position only.
So if I spend those 10 hours link building to either one of them I can get and enjoy number 1 spot. Now If I split 50/50 I will not reach such results, I will have both my main page and that subpage ranking for the same keyword in 5/6 or 4/5 positions only.
So thats why I think its better to concentrate on only 1 of them. Well maybe 90/10 to make it more natural.
Does that make sense?

Hi super!

Focus on the second one you listed: "b) to that single post with url Unrelatedkeyword.com/my-exact-keyword"

I've seen a lot of web pages reaching the top pages of Google like this!

Same as you saw a lot of pages to reach top with a) as well :)
Plus most of those you are talking are seconday keywords, like 9 of my 10 posts will be on secondary keywords and they will most likely hit top sports for their small keywords anyway.
So my situation is a little bit different as I am looking to rank for main keyword there. Just not sure which is more powerful - having keyword in url but just 10% of content or having 10 times more content but losing keyword in url..

As stated above build backlinks to the page you want to rank and is most likely to rank for that phrase i.e. the internal keyword specific URL page. Then get some links directories etc to the main site and the link juice will flow to your internal page too. You wnat the backlink profile of the whole site looking natural.

If your single post is whats important to you then build the links to your post. As you said its your "selling post" so what your saying is its your landing page so thats where you want the people that click on your links to land so thats where you should send them, case closed. I agree you with some of the other posters that you should sprinkle in some links to your index page ( you could even setup a redirect to your LP) and also your other posts but concentrate on your money page

Build links to both of them.

Yeah I would build links to both of them. I were in your shoes before and here's what I did and that gave me great results. Create a marketing backlinking schedule in front of your computer or anywhere where you can see them when doing some backlinking. That really helps. When I had 2 keywords I remember sending articles on directories everyday playing on the keywords from day 1 to day 31.

Example
Day 1 - monday(January 01)
www mycalculator com - I backlink the site with the anchor text "mycalculator".. btw I targeted this keyword as well but this has a hard competition

Day 2 - tuesday(January 02)
www mycalculator com/Grossprofitmargincalculator.html - my second keyword and I do backlinks as well here. Long tail keyword "gross profit margin calculator". Im not a fan of putting "-" dashes on the keyword but it's up to you.

Day 3 - wednesday(Jan 03)
If you have a third keyword
www mycalculator com/ periodicalscientificcalculator.html then backlink this as well.
or if you only have 2 keyword then go back on Day 01 for "mycalculator" backlinks..... Then what they say just rinse and repeat the steps....

Also Don't look at your stats and backlinks daily cause that will really cause some damage. What I can say is look for it monthly if not weekly. You'll be satisfied as hell specially in week 3-4 where all the links is showing up from week1....

Hope that helps out!

Update if anyone interested:

Strange thing happened. So far I built links to single post only: domain/blog-post-name/ , zero links to home page and lots to that post. BUT I did not get that blog post ranking for that keyword "blog post name". It is the home page which is ranking despite the fact that all backlinks are built to single blog post. I did not expect that.

Try simply to improve the trust of your website and then place anchored links to that post.

Not really, my question is answered. Even though I built links for that post only I rank best for main domain. So I pretty much wasted those links, If I built them directly to th domain from the beginning I would probably have even better ranking position.
So conclusion is that keyword in url (not EMD, but just keyword in url) does not help that much.

I'd build links to both. I did this recently on a site where the home page and a category page both target more or less the same keywords. Both URLs ended up ranking on the first page.

link the domai nwith various anchors [also ones u target with the post] and lin kthe post with anchors needed. drop more links to the post than to main.

linking main never hurts tho!
