Should you give up ? Maybe. Picking a field you're not interested in isnt helping obviously.
My suggest is if you're doing SEO, off a fresh domain, be patient. Domains take atleast 9 months to age. I would suggest waiting 10-11 months before calling it a total bust.
Unless you've already made up your mind in which case sell your domain and use the money to buy a domain in an area you're interested in.

You want to give up coz you think the competition is tight? (sorry i didn't check other reply's).
So i assume you only checked for one keyword. I again assume its a short tail keyword. Can you try and research for the next best keyword from your niche which is a little long from that "main keyword". Then can you add few "fillers" to the start and end of it (based on your niche) and then check the competition again. Get at least 100 such keywords. Check the competition of these 100 keywords. if you find that CPC of those long tailkeywords is 0.05 and search volume is greater than 1000 then you should try to bid for them on adwords. I've taken a hypothetical situation since i got no clue of your keyword and/or niche.
