The Value of a Feed

What makes a feed great is that it brings the most current site content to you in a format that ensures your privacy and saves you the time of visiting a myriad of websites. This is typically done through the use of what is called an Aggregator or Newsreader.

Aggregators and News Readers

While you can sort of read feeds as the plain text intended for computers, it is a lot easier to use an aggregator or your own personal news reader. The two serve the same function; they let you subscribe to feeds, automatically go out and get the new posts for you (before you wake up, for example), then let you read them when you want, all in one place. Both can be found in "free" versions, as well as those with a cost.
News readers, also called feed readers or RSS readers, are software programs that run on your computer (or PDA, or even your phone!) that let you easily subscribe to feeds and read them all in one place. Some are relatively simple, showing the headline and summary. The fancier ones often work with (or in) your browser to make viewing the web page or blog behind the feed very easy. Typically subscribing to a feed with a news reader is an easy click or drag from your browser.
Aggregators are the web site equivalent of a news reader. For people that don't want to (or can't) install new software on the computers that they use, aggregators provide many of the same functions as news readers, but through going to a site with a web browser. This can be convenient for people that read news from public places, where they can't bring their reading list with them. One disadvantage to many aggregators is that it may take more than just clicking or dragging on a feed icon to subscribe.

Does Feedster recommend a specific reader or aggregator?

No, Feedster will work with virtually any reader or aggregator that works with "current" RSS feeds. Readers are available for computers, be they Mac, Windows, or Unix-based, along with the popular PDAs and smart phones. Some are stand-alone applications. Others work as browser plugins with advanced browsers like Firefox.
The Firefox, Opera, and Safari browsers, among others, will let you read subscribe to and read feeds without any additional software. Some people find them a little confusing to subscribe to feeds with, compared to some RSS readers. Check their websites for details.
There are so many good products out there now that it is hard to just pick one or two. We recommend that you use an up-to-date version, as the specifications for feeds are still changing and older readers might not be able to understand some of the newest feeds. Atom is a newer format for feeds that is popular with some bloggers and blogging tools. You can check one partial list of "AtomEnabled" software for some pointers. Note that this third-party site may not list all readers that can read Atom feeds, especially for PDAs and smart phones. For those devices, you might want to check your usual source of software for your device and see if a trial version of a reader or two is available.

Finding Feeds

While feeds are an extremely convenient way to read site content, first you need to find those feeds Blogs and websites that you regularly visit may already offer feeds. To find additional topical feeds, try searching Feedster. After all, our database includes millions of feeds dating back to 2003.

Using Feedster

We literally scour the internet every minute, discovering millions of new feeds each week. In fact, any search on Feedster can become a feed that you can subscribe to. Simply search, and the orange button at the top of the results is a link to a subscription of that search result. A good use for this might be market research on you, your company or products.

How to Subscribe

Once you've found feeds, a common way of subscribing to them is to copy the URL of the feed (right click on the feed icon - Copy Link) and paste it into your aggregator. Some aggregators also have buttons that allow you to subscribe more easily .

What is OPML?

OPML is a way to format hierarchical lists. Practically, OPML files are often used for lists of feeds. For example, many aggregators have the capability of importing a list of feeds from an OPML file, and many can also save your list of feeds as an OPML file.

What is Atom?

There are a number of formats for feeds, including several types of RSS, as well as Atom. Both serve the same purpose. Feedster is capable of understanding Atom as well as RSS, however some aggregators may only be able to read certain types.

What is XML?

XML stands for eXtensible Markup Language, and is simply a way of writing information that is easy for computers to read. Feeds are written in XML.
