When you start up a website, has anybody found a trend that correlates between the number of pages you have indexed, and the amount of organic search engine traffic? If so, what was the average amount of pages that you need indexed to get x amount of visitors?

There is no correlation. More Indexed Pages = More Visitors, assuming you rank well on the SERPs for something.

No, because you ranking well on the SERPs depends on a lot of things including your niche etc. You can rank well on the SERPs for junk like "dadfadsfsdafadsfaS" but that will not do you any good.

yeah it depends what terms you're ranking for. there will also likely be diminishing returns, where the traffic growth slows with each new page, because you're probably begin to cannobilize your own traffic

Of course both are related. Having a 5 page site SEO'd to the max vs a 200,000 site SEO'd to the max, the 200,000 page site will win with the same backlinks and SEO promotion.

The point is, the 200,000 page site will hit way more off-the-wall keywords you may not have thought of. Therefore, more traffic.

That being said, there's no way to calculate x pages = y visitors because it depends on onsite/offsite optimization.

I've heard rumors that sites with very few pages indexed won't do well with SEO and gaining natural traffic. Is that true when you take out the volume factor?

Well if you owned sexporn.com and had a one page site that ranked #1 for porn and #1 for sex, you'd probably be able to make more money than a 5000 page site that ranked for longtail keywords.

but then you'd run into trouble trying to convert the 15 year old boys looking for porn and sex into customers :)

I also agree with Scott's response.

I don't do porn but yeah, I agree with this too. I have both types of sites. Some only have 20 pages and rank #1 and others are 200,000+ pages and get loads of clicks from longtails.
