No, that's kinda the point of my rant. I dont do SEO because I'm not a person who wishes to experience the Google Noahs Ark every month.
I've ranted for years to people the basic, "Google does everything to stop affiliates, it does not want affiliates - it's impossible to work with something that DOESNT WANT YOU."
Plus SEO isnt hard. It's ad buying for text links. I did a test 3 months ago with a "brand new blog" and just text-link-ads.com links [Don't people define SEO as one way links from authority sites Google laiks?] I put up 10 articles, bought links, added an extra buy every 2 weeks - and 8 weeks later I was holding and maintain 1-2nd spot. Of course SEO also makes fucking nothing in comparison to every other form of traffic, so yah - fun experience, waste of life.
SEO is easy. Its just stupid too - because you're basing a business model around something with no stable foundation. Who builds fking houses on sand?

I get what you mean, and I've used the same analogy "building a business on sand", but now I liken each website to having a beach house by the ocean.
I don't live in them, and I don't completely depend on them, and I accept the fact that a tsunami may come along and wipe them out, but like you said, SEO isn't all that complicated, doesn't take long to rebuild if you get hit and is profitable.
And how is that site doing now?
They were not permanent links, right?
A couple of the vets from here have moved on from pure Google SEO (there is an element of SEO in almost all online marketing). We chat on skype about it now and then. No, that's kinda the point of my rant. I dont do SEO because I'm not a person who wishes to experience the Google Noahs Ark every month.

Here you go, as online Marketers we are SALESMEN/SALESWOMEN. Period.
A good salesman/saleswoman prospects ALL THE TIME!!
Cold Calling
Phone Prospecting
Direct Mail
TV Spots
Newspaper ads
Magazine Ads
Business Partnerships with other complimenting companies.
etc..etc....
I think of Google as an Internet Phone Book so to speak.
Before the Internet people would crack open The Yellow Pages to find a business to fulfill their needs at their time of need most of the time.
Now they GOOGLE for what they need at their time of need.
No successful Business or Salesman/Saleswoman would EVER rely on just the Yellow Pages for their business.
Yellow page phone calls were OK, but again the CLOSE RATIO compared to customers from other channels was pitiful. Phone book customers were usually "Shopping Around" with the phone.
The same is still true today with Google. People Google something and then go to the pages of the results to compare and shop around.
I'm talking about generic natural Google traffic. Not anything you've PAID Google for to get any TARGETED TRAFFIC.
So, I think of my sites as listings in a Phone Book as far as Google, Yahoo, & MSN/Bing are concerned. Customers and Traffic from those sources are never EVER counted on.
It's also nice to be indexed in the search engines just in case a customer for some reason has forgotten the URL of one of my sites and wants to come back.
Back when you PAID for a Yellow Pages spot, if they FUCKED UP your AD, Name, Address, or Heaven Forbid your PHONE NUMBER at the time of the printing run it would be A WHOLE YEAR before it could get fixed!!!
For those just starting out with little or no money I can see where SEO can/could generate some free traffic to begin with. But any sales from that traffic HAD BETTER be allocated to BUILDING A DAMN LIST!!!! Then start investing in other advertising channels to get more people ON THE LIST!!
NOTE: Most people who get into Business don't realize that 80 to 100% of first and even second year profits are to be PUT BACK INTO THE BUSINESS to GROW IT!!
There are many ways to get traffic and customers, but "The List" will always be your most PROFITABLE TOOL in any type of Business/Marketing. Both online & off line.
I personally have NO PROBLEM with the Search Engines doing whatever the hell they want to do with their Algorithms. It's "THEIR" business to do with whatever they want.
Now, if I PAY THEM for a service and then they don't perform as per our agreement.......well now, that's totally different ball of wax!!! lol
You guys/gals need to create sites that PEOPLE want to visit and RETURN TO. From there you can do/earn most anything you would like.
As others have said MANY times before, you CANNOT be relying on just ONE TRAFFIC SOURCE!!! Hell, anything less than 5 avenues of traffic is just disaster waiting to happen if you're depending on SALES to make your money.
Handle your business properly and don't fret over what the Search Engines are doing. (I'm not saying to IGNORE SEO, just don't DEPEND on it for your money.)
