I am pretty new to marketing online but I've made about $512 on my network the last couple of days. The only thing I am a little concerned about is a scamming network. For privacy issues I am not giving the name of the network, but how common if at all do network scam their affiliates and not pay them? Luckily I know the co-owner of my network personally so I have a little insurance, but just for future reference, is it something you should look out for?

In business you watch your ass no matter what you're doing. So to make sure nobody is messing with you, be sure to set up your own tracking systems. Most of the networks talked about in WF will pay you. Like everything else in this world, there are those who scam and those who are honest.

I've never had any issues with any of my networks. As long as your not involved with fraud or anything illegal, you should be fine. On grey area tactics, networks have an unofficial don't ask, don't tell policy. As long as the advertiser is happy with your traffic you should be fine.

If you stay with the bigger networks and/or the ones most commonly mentioned on this board then you should be fine.

how does one set-up a tracking system?

A-fucking-men. I just want to add in (just so there's no confusion) that no matter how accurate your own tracking is, that it's only good for you in knowing whether the network is pulling one over one you or not. I'd hate for you to start tracking thinking that if you have a dispute that you can present your data to the network to compare to theirs and they'll go "Oh, our bad...we were wrong." That'll never happen (and rightfully so).

Just stick with top tier networks that everyone uses like copeac, hydra, neverblue, etc. People get scammed when they go with the ghetto 3rd tier networks.

ya i would agree with that (even knowing as little as i do about the game) and the only reason I signed up with this private network and very under the radar, is because of my personal connection with one of the co-owners, so I guess I'll know once I receive my first check if it's legit.

The smaller networks I find are usually better in a lot of ways. The bad thing about the big networks is that they will shave/scrub all they want because they know they can. The small ones won't mess with you because they want to keep you.

I agree, stick with the larger, more well known networks. They have a reputation to uphold so they will most likely pay you every time as long as your traffic is legit.

Yup this is right on. Just be on the up and up and you should have nothing to worry about. The good networks pay some even pay the affiliates when they don't get paid by the advertiser :)

it's also extremely common for an affiliate to worry about getting scammed until they get paid a few times. i was panicked before my first payments came from the network. thought everyone was scamming me, then you get some payments and you chill the fuck out.

I've been a part of three startup networks - including eAdvertising - and I can assure that any reputable company will pay affiliates for the value of their traffic if they have any intention of competing in the space. A quality network will monitor both front-end distribution and backend quality in order to protect themselves and the advertiser. If an affiliate is producing quantifiable traffic with tangible results, there is no need to worry about payment.

To further assuage concerns, an affiliate should proactively reach out to their affiliate manager to gauge the quality of the personnel and management. If the affiliate manager is knowledgeable and can explain the rationale/strategy behind the network, it would behoove you to test.

Networks that have a proprietary product/idea and a cohesive financial strategy (pay Net15, willing to wire after first week, etc) are most trustworthy. I'd be leery of networks that are strictly brokering other campaigns and don't reallly have a straight answer when it comes to payment.

Me too. And your right, after a payment or two, you'll mellow out.

Follow the advertisers terms. If you are unsure, ask your AM (by email) before you start running it. If anything goes wrong, you'll have a written record and if the network is worth a shit they will see that you were right and take the hit themselves.

This is a really important point. Speak to your AM so you have everything on record. This way he cant come back to you and say "well you did something sketchy therefore we cant pay you"
