Yeah, remember all that hoopla about google letting people bid on trademarked words? Woops!

Rosetta Stone, maker of language-learning software, is joining a growing crowd of companies suing Google for letting third-parties buy permission to use other people's trademarks on AdWords.
Rosetta filed the lawsuit today in US District Court in Virginia, where the company is headquartered. The complaint fingers Google's recent change to its AdWords trademark policy that lets advertisers buy the right to trademarks in text ads even if they don't have approval from the actual trademark owner to use them.

The complaint alleges that the practice aids third parties in "hijacking" consumers and interferes with Rosetta's sales and business...

I can see both sides of this issue. However, if the money eventually gets to Rosetta Stone anyway, what do they care?

And yeah, dropping them from the index would be pretty ballsy. And legally there would be nothing RS could do about it. :zzwhip:

I tried adwords with Rosetta Stone about a year ago, but ad got pulled. What happened since then????

I don't understand how google can be held liable for "trademark infringement". They run a proprietary software that people use to search for stuff. If an individual wants to pay google for a term that is trademarked to market something of their own or even the product. Why would google not be allowed to do it. I know this might not make sense.

How about this. Since google is owned by google and information you take from google to form a case is the property of google. The information you gather would be insubissable in court.

Google won't slap RS. On the other hand, trying to sue Big G? Who the hell do they think they are?

What I don't get is how anyone actually learns a language with Rosetta Stone... I've tried it and it seems pretty retarded. You just start learning random ass words and then one day you'll be able to speak it?

It works for me. It starts with simple words like man, woman, girl, boy, car, colors and builds sentences from there. I think figuring out the words and sentences from pictures works great compared to just reading translated words.

Have you achieved any level of fluency or strong conversational ability in a language just by using Rosetta?

Maybe I'll give it another shot..

How do you learn to conjugate verbs or speak in different tenses?

not all languages have conjugate-able verbs and/or different tenses. ^_^ thus a small portion of why learning mandarin is actually easier for me than learning spanish was. rosetta is a good program, though I couldn't tell you if it's hundreds of dollars good, ahem.
