Tired of noob journals yet?

I need to start this journal because I have a huge problem with not sticking to something until it becomes profitable. I first heard of "make teh internet moneys" almost exactly a year ago when I stumbled across Partner With LOL and was an inch away from making $30 for an affiliate. Did some research, found it was a scam, and got curious about working online. Since then, I've tried all of the following: Mini-niche sites + adsense; article marketing; SEO + listbuilding; SEO + ebook; blackhat video marketing; Adwords, MSN, Yahoo, and Facebook PPC; and PPV (Adon + Media Traffic). I'm disgusted by how much money I wasted on ebooks. In my estimations, I would say that I've spent about $2,000 on all of my efforts (mostly ebooks), and have made MAYBE $500 so far. I'm a cheapskate, so I refunded as many ebooks as I could that didn't make me money (read: all of them), and from that I got maybe $600 back.

Now I know what you're thinking: There's a million bucks in almost all of those traffic sources, right? I'm aware of this, but to restate the first sentence above, I invariably lose focus and move on to something else when I lose interest and/or money. That, combined with another bad habit of reading too much and doing too little, has resulted in me becoming stagnant. I think I've read the mantra "Master one traffic source and THEN move on" enough times now that it's finally gotten through my head. If nothing else, I know enough to not buy another ebook as long as I live.

I'm a full-time college student. I left my telemarketing job in mid-March because I thought I had a project in place that would take off. Of course, it didn't, and two months later I'm getting along by the skin of my teeth: a couple weeks ago, I had $5 to my name. Thankfully I've gotten some money in, and that's allowed me to pay the bills. This whole experience has persuaded me that I NEED to get into free methods before I bankrupt myself, and I do plan on getting into SEO and site-flipping in the summer after final exams.

For now, I'm back on PPV with Media Traffic. I chose MT because it's the traffic source that I had the most success with: in October, I was only $30-40 short of breaking even on my deposit. I had no idea what I was doing then, and was pushing rebills and health insurance by targeting "get health insurance" and "acai berry" URLs. How I almost broke even, I still don't know. But I figure that since I now know what to promote on PPV and how to promote it (for the most part), I can get a profitable campaign going. I'm running with EWA, and their campaign tips are a HUGE help, not to mention all the help my AM has been giving.

Here's how it stands now: I've got about $185 left, and there's basically no competition whatsoever in my niche, so CPVs are between $0.01-$0.02. I'm running three offers and haven't gotten a single conversion yet, and I think it's because my targeting is wrong. I got about 700 views to an offer spread between 5-7 URLs, and no leads. I've paused the campaign for now so I can refine it and get better targets.

For the second offer, I'm going to use Quantcast to find sites with a high concentration of my target demo and load those up. For this offer, I'm told that it's better to do broad demographic targeting instead of keyword-based URLs. The third offer is keyword-focused and has tons of room for diversification, so I'm going to scrape some URLs for that later on.

If everything fails and I don't turn a profit on anything, I'm going to get a refund when my balance falls to $25 and move to Adon Network. They allow download offers (MT doesn't), and those would be easier to convert than what I'm trying now.

tl;dr - Watch me try and make monies on PPV.

Proverbs 12:15 says, "The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise." So if anyone has any tips or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'll try to keep this updated often for motivation, and so you can yell at me for being lazy.

Something I just noticed:

Prosper says that I got 677 views ("clicks") yesterday, but EWA is reporting only 576. I think this is because the user closes the pop right when they see it, before Prosper can redirect to the LP. Is there any way to improve load time without getting a better hosting package? I'm on the wimpy $10/month Hostgator plan.

Work on shrinking the file size of your lander, the smaller the file size the quicker the load.

Little progress the past couple days. I had a big college project to work on yesterday, so I just let offer #2 run all day and collect data. My budget on MT is only $10/day, so not a huge deal.

A few days ago I got a stray conversion on a random URL for $10.40, and it only took three views on that URL. Yay for $3 EPCs? Aside from that, no other conversions. I've paused the campaign now since 1 conversion out of 1100 views isn't too awesome.

I'm satisfied with the volume of traffic I'm getting, but the offer isn't doing very well direct-linked, probably because I'm doing broad targeting of the demographic instead of keyword-based URLs. With that in mind, I'm PMing some designers here to get a quote for a mini-LP so I can grab attention, spark interest, and get the visitor in the mindset to complete the offer. All I'm looking for is a main headline, sub-header, image, clickable button, and maybe a paragraph or two of text under the image. Obviously it will be sized to 750x550, and hopefully all the content fits in that space. No links and no forms -- just a button.

I'm hoping to not have to spend more than $30 or so on this LP, since it's a pretty minimal design and shouldn't take long to do. The offer is very versatile and can be used in dozens of niches, and I think the LP will fit the bill for that. Not only should it increase conversions, but also help EWA's reporting by getting rid of the junk traffic I'm sending.

So does anyone know a reasonably-priced designer? It doesn't have to be the best LP ever, but just something that will get the job done. I'm waiting for responses to my PMs in the meantime.

LP is finished -- Thanks Rob (link above).

I've re-created the campaign using this LP and have added 25 targets. I've customized the LP to be very relevant to the URLs I've chosen, so I expect the CTR to be high. I'm targeting a niche audience, and my URLs are mainsite.com, subdomain1.mainsite.com, subdomain2.mainsite.com, etc. This site has a ton of traffic -- it was the highest among the broader URLs I was using before -- and the majority of its users are my target demographic. The great thing about this offer is that it's extremely versatile -- I can copy the exact same method for another niche audience and scale up that way. I had my LP designed in such a way that it can be customized for any audience. All I have to do is edit the text and image and I'm good to go. If this campaign is profitable, I already have a few other target audiences in mind that I think would work.

So, now to wait for MT to approve the campaign, then sit back and collect data.

The campaign got approved last night and since my demographic hasn't been online until the last couple of hours, I haven't gotten much traffic. Based on early data, it's not performing too well: 150 views with only 2 clicks to the offer. I'll let this run until tomorrow morning and see if it's just a fluke. I don't want to be scrutinizing every single view.

If it doesn't work, I have another angle that I can use with the same LP and traffic that might at least get a higher CTR. Admittedly, my ad copy is pretty boring, so I think I'll spice that up too. And if this audience completely flops, I'll apply the same technique to a different group until something sticks.

Something else has been bothering me lately. I don't have a lot of cash to be testing with, but I'm finding myself with a huge amount of time. Today alone, I've spent the past 5 hours in the library here at college (only place with Wifi) and I haven't accomplished a single thing. I honestly couldn't tell you what I've been doing all this time. Nothing productive, to be sure. It takes me maybe 10 minutes a day to tweak a campaign, and if I'm launching a new campaign, that might take an hour at most. Since I'm not off the ground yet, I don't have a lot to be monitoring/adjusting, so the rest of my time is wasted since I have nothing to spend it on.

I've been thinking about SEO since it's free (essentially), and it would give me something to spend time on, as opposed to Facebook and flash games. However, I have very little SEO knowledge, and I think I might lose my focus on PPV so much that I'll just give up on it and move on to something else, which has been the story of my IM career since I started. I want to master PPV before moving to something else, but I feel like a loser since I'm wasting all my time doing nothing. I read the stories of how the successful people started by grinding through 10-hour days and all-nighters, and I'm sitting here wishing I had something to spend 10 hours on. I don't think success comes from 20 minutes a day.

Can anyone offer some advice on this?

In other news, I need a free VPN software. I was using Hotspot Shield and it was great, but then my college switched ISPs and it's not working anymore.

Damn I wish I had that time. I have school, homework, article writing (need $$), SEO, sports, plug you gotta hang out once in a while. Worst part is, most of the shit you do in school is bullshit. /rant

I'd say go for it, try SEO, it seems confusing, but you just need to get in it, and shit slowly starts to make sense. Or if you're running out of funds for PPV, and don't have enough time for a job, you could write articles. Although truth be told, its shit money, but I just need some cash haha.

^ Yeah, I've thought about article-writing too. I might start that again.

Update: I checked my stats and the grand total is ~400 views, 3 clicks, 0 conversions in the past day and a half. I deactivated the campaign and am going to take the other approach I thought of. I'm also going to find another audience to target.

I think I'll get the most help on here if I say what I'm promoting... A discerning affiliate will notice the $10.40 payout mentioned above, which is about normal for a mobile offer. I'm running an IQ quiz offer on EWA, targeting young male demographics like the updates and emails recommend. My current campaign is for the users of a particular online game, and my LP basically says "[Game character]'s IQ is only xx! Is yours higher? Take our quiz on the next page to find out." However, as you can see, this isn't quite working out, so have fun losing money if you decide to copy my technique. :)

Instead of focusing on a game character, I'm going to use more of a "Today's highest IQ score on [game] is xx. Can you beat it?" approach. I'm going to throw in a few challenging, almost provoking phrases to increase CTR, because that seems to be my weak point.

Have to get going for now. I'll make the adjustments this afternoon and see how things go.

Made the above-mentioned adjustments to the LP. I also created another version of the LP with the same approach but different ad copy, and I somehow figured out how to rotate the two while keeping all the tracking in place. Unfortunately, I had to create a new destination URL on Media Traffic, which means the campaign is paused until they approve it. I'll see which LP has a better CTR and go from there.

I'm wanting to test another audience while this LP is running to see if I can get any conversions elsewhere. But wouldn't you know it, almost all the sites that have high concentrations of young males with decent traffic volume are gaming sites, so I don't think I'll get too far away from the "gamer" type and still be hitting my demo. I was (and still am) a gamer, and am very averse to clicking ads, and I fear that my audience is the same way. We'll see how things go.

I've got another mobile offer that EWA says is doing great on PPV, and another non-mobile offer I can try too. But with only $150 left in traffic, I wonder if running 3 offers at the same time would result in a lack of statistically relevant data.

I thought about it a little, and I think SEO would require so much focus that I would give up on PPV. I'm probably going to open up my article-writing service when I get home from school, since it's essentially brainless work with guaranteed pay, and I'll have a bunch of time to put into it.

Last of all, I've come up with a definite goal to achieve as soon as possible. My girlfriend (fiancee in 12 days) has been stuck with a crummy Dell 1501 laptop for the past four years. It's always had some problems, but I recently had to format it and dirty install a new OS, which has resulted in more headaches. I've been eying the below netbook for awhile for myself, but if I get it, I think I'll give it to her:

Newegg.com - ASUS Eee PC 1005PE-PU17-BU Royal Blue Intel Atom N450(1.66GHz) 10.1" WSVGA 1GB Memory 250GB HDD Netbook

I'm rounding it up to $400. So, as soon as possible, I need to make $400 for this netbook. The goal is especially motivating, since it's not for me. Whether it be from PPV or article writing, I'll soon have it.

Tomorrow and Thursday are going to be completely open to me -- no classes, exams, anything. The most I need to do is an hour each day for a small school project, but otherwise I'm free. The only things I can think of to do are these:

- Find another audience for the IQ offer
- Look at data from the current split-test LPs and make adjustments to improve CTR
- Get campaigns going for the other mobile and non-mobile offers and have them ready in case I decide to run them at the same time as the IQ offer

That will take maybe 3 hours at most, but I'm lost as to what else I could spend all day doing. Any ideas?

I've been up since 4:40 this morning but I'm surprisingly not tired. Not yet anyway. Got online about 2.5 hours ago and have just been wasting time... I need to get something accomplished and build up momentum to get more things done.

My 25 targets on the current campaign got randomly de-activated last night, so I'm chucking that audience and moving to another. Another thing I noticed was that I wasn't even hitting my $10/day budget with those targets, so I think it would be hard to scale up even if it did become profitable.

I think I'm going to target a different gaming site along with something non-gaming related. I have an approach that I think may work.

Goal: $400
Revenue: $10.40

Well, I haven't been doing much, mostly because I'm unsure what to do. I didn't run either of those other offers because a lot of personal stuff has been going on that has kept me from really focusing on my campaigns.

However, in reading on here about Media Traffic, I think the best idea would be to get a refund for my remaining balance and go with another PPV source. If I understand the threads on here correctly, MT just doesn't convert as well as other networks unless you already have a profitable campaign and copy it over. So, I've requested a refund for the remaining $150.

I'm trying to decide between Adon Network and Lead Impact. I've seen a few posts on here saying that they both convert better than MT. LI has more traffic than Adon, but the minimum deposit is $200, and I'm not sure if I can afford the extra $50. Adon's minimum is $25 I believe, if not $50, which leaves me with at least an extra $100 to save for another time. Also, it's rumored that Lead Impact (Zango 2.0) has a tendency to jack your campaigns after awhile. I'm going to email both Adon and LI to see if they allow download offers like Gamevance and Play Sushi, because I'd really like to get into games. I wanted to promote games even before I got on MT, but then found out that they don't allow any downloads whatsoever, so I had to move to mobile offers which were the closest thing demographic-wise.

Unless things take off right away with whatever network I choose, I'm going to start up my article-writing service again so I can have some cash to make it through. I'm not a huge fan of scrambling when it's time to pay the month's bills, so a little cushion would be nice. I get home from school next week, so I'll open up shop then.

So, things are paused until I decide which network to go with, and until I get my refund from MT. In the mean time, suggestions are welcome.

Have moved over to Adon Network and set up a game campaign. Lead Impact didn't have what I was looking for, but I might use them in the future for scaling campaigns.

Pulled about 160 URLs that are related to the offer just to see how it would work. 0 competition on any URL, which can be a good or bad sign. Tracking is in place, etc etc. Direct-linked. I've submitted my URLs twice to Adon but they're not showing up... Maybe I have to wait until they're approved?

My goal by the end of this week is to make this campaign profitable, regardless of how much traffic I'm getting. I don't think traffic volume will be a huge issue: as long as I have the data that will make the campaign work, I can scale it up with other sources.

SUCCESS!!!!

I worked with my rep at Adon and he helped me shape the campaign into profitability. The traffic has been rather small, but nonetheless I'm PROFITABLE! As of right now, I've spent $5.88 and made $14.50.

However, I'm a little stuck because I can't upload a tracking pixel onto EWA. The offer requires a secured pixel (https), and it looks like in order to do that, I'll have to pay about $25 for an SSL on my domain. So, right now I have no idea which URLs are bringing the conversions. I've opened up a content-writing thread (http://www.wickedfire.com/content/92063-native-english-content-writer-has-3-things-you-need.html), and the first profits from it are going to go towards an SSL so I can optimize and scale up this campaign. Until then, the campaign is bringing a positive ROI so I'll just let it run.

The free review copies on my thread have already been given out, but mention this thread in your PM and I'll give you a half-price discount ($0.75/100 words).

Things are looking up...

Keep it up. When I started, forcing myself to write down what I did forced me to objectify what I learned from my actions and made me just do it.

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

I picked up an SSL cert and saved some cash by Googling a promo code. Can't remember which one I used but it was only $13 instead of $30, so that was a plus. Stumbled my way through installing it on my Prosper domain, and I'm pretty sure it's working correctly. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten another conversion since installing it and uploading the pixel, so I can't say for sure if it's working.

My AM at Adon recommended going really broad for this campaign, but I'm afraid that I might have gone too broad. I'll say that I'm promoting a particular game, and the majority of my traffic is coming from broad, game-related keywords, instead of keywords for this particular game. I hope that makes sense. Fortunately, there are several general game offers at EWA, so I'm going to throw those in a rotator and see which performs best on the same traffic. I'm thinking that since my audience is just interested in games in general, putting a generic game offer in front of them will do better than a more specific one. But if it flops, I'll just switch things back to normal. In the meantime, I'm going to take out the general game keywords from the current campaign and stick with specific KWs. Traffic volume will take a hit, but I'm sure the trickle of traffic will still bring conversions.

I've also got a completely separate, unrelated offer that I want to promote, which both my Adon rep and EWA rep say should do well.

Goal: $400
Revenue: $27.80
