I heard you disowned him.......... (developing)
I never did ringtones before, so don't hang on to every word I say or use the advice as if I know what I'm talking about, this is purely from an outside view.
First off, if you're doing anything with Adwords as a ppc model, you shouldn't focus on using every cookie cutter site out there, instead, private/white label your own, and shove content onto there, like text content, so it appears to be a content site, rather than a commercial site. I know for a fact that it will help your Google Advertiser QS (Quality Score) so that you won't have to shell out the normal going rate for the keywords you want to target. Just comes out to more bang for your buck. If you're going to spend $4k+ a month on PPC, why not get as much traffic for it as possible?
Second, let's face it, with any type of product or service, if you want to convert better, the name of the game is sheer volume. Volume clicks/leads will ultimately get you a higher margin of sales on your ringtone offer, and will then increase your earns and profit margins. If you're afraid of taking a test run and spending more than $500-$1,000 on PPC when everyone else is spending a mininum of $10k on it, then you're just going to be collecting their scraps, which won't be much to write home about. Again, with anything, you need to be bold and take a fucking chance guys. If it works on a smaller scale, which you've already got proof that it does, then it will work on a slightly larger scale if all you have to do is just bring more volume to your pages.
Third, perhaps start to think outside the box for a moment. Why not create some type of newsletter for Verizon or T-Mobile cellphone users. Tell them they'll get free this and that, free coupons for accessories, and all of that crap. Either way, make it a free signup, get their email addresses, and when you have a nice amount, send them one offer, to a private label ringtone page and make it a sweet deal for them to signup. You can even go as far as asking them to email you their UserID's for the ringtone place after they signup, and comp them with some coupons or something to make it a better offer. This way you have yourself a targeted list of emails, and you know their carriers already, and if any other offers ever come up that would bank from specific carriers, you have it sitting there waiting for you to push it. I wouldn't even consider this incentivized either, because they are getting some flimsy add-on to their service, it's not like they are signing up JUST to get that coupon. Also, when you collect the emails, you can use PPC, and your per click cost would be wayyyy cheaper too because they aren't targeting ringtones.
Well, those are just some ideas to throw around. If you use it, and it works, come back and let me know so I can feel all warm and mushy inside. I personally have zero interest in ever jumping on the ringtone wagon, so it's all up to you guys.
