Can anyone recommend any scary psychological type horror films?

Something without all the pointless gore like Saw, but really really creepy and well made?

Things I've seen

Them
Blair Witch
The Ring
etc

I really dug Cube but it does have some gory parts.

Event Horizon was pretty eerie when I first saw it but that's mostly because I watched it on the one place on Earth that's the closest you can get to actually being on a space ship: while out to sea on a submarine when I was in the Navy.

I'm sure I'm not thinking of a million others. I'd like to hear others' suggestions too because modern horror movies make me yawn. Maybe it's because of the associations I have from seeing them as a kid, but I still think that horror movies made in the 70s and early 80s are the scariest. I think it's because they have that eerie feel to them. Salem's Lot nearly made me actually shit myself when I was a kid.

[Rec], The Descent and Blair With are by far the three scariest movies I've ever seen. Do yourself a big favor and do not watch the American remake of [Rec]: Quarantine.

Also really scary are High Tension/Haute Tension and Inside/À l'interieure. Two french horror movies. I had to stop Inside after 25 minutes because I couldn't take it anymore. Too scary. I will resume watching when I have the guts to do so :)

I came here to mention this film. I can't believe you watched that film in that environment. You are my hero.

Meh... 99% of so called "scary" movies suck, IMO. The last time I got genuinely scared from a movie, was when I saw the "The Shining". But I was also 13 years old, lol.

Horror is still my favorite genre of films though. And it's still the type of movies I watch most often. Most are duds/mediocre, but every once in a while I discover a true gem. These are the best I have seen in recent years and my personal favorites:

The Strangers (2008)

The Ugly

The Eye (chinese original)

Shutter (thai original)

The Ring (the US remake)

Also check out the 2002 Xbox video game "Fatal Frame" (aka. "Project Zero"). It's still the creepiest game I have seen.

Speaking of scary films, please see the following trailer that while may not necessarily be that scary, it does include one of my songs, as well as boobs:

I didn't think The Shining was scary, perhaps it was because I was about 16 when I watched it. The only film I've been genuinely scared by so far is The Ring but like you I was about 12-13.

I've heard [REC] is scary but I tend not to listen to people when they say certain films are scary, a couple of months ago me and my friends watched 'Excorcism of Emily Rose', some of them were saying it was the scariest film of all time (I heard the same when it was released) and that was some hilariously weak shit.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is crap compared to [Rec]. But make sure you watch [Rec] in the right mood and setting: High volume, phones off, at night and no lights.

28 Days Later.
Cloverfield
Cabin Fever

I'm going to also say +1 for The Decent (Creepy as hell, original plot, and kick ass women, couldn't ask for a better horror movie)

I love Horror movies but I don't like slasher films. Usually more like Alien or the some of ones mentioned by the OP. Supernatural Horror FTW!
