He was already balling off the AdSense money way back in the day. Then they added their (shitty) ad platform system so he got even more $.

If he didn't give a fuck about the money, then he would not have sold for such a specific sum of it. You're also going off of old speculative figures from years ago. POF grew up and matured rapidly when Markus decided it was the right time and more importantly that he wanted to take the business to the next level. He's a really underrated motherfucker.

I hope IAC drives Ben crazy though.. lol

Remember when Inc. Magazine did a cover story on Markus and how he used to post on DP and they didnt believe that he made $11,000,000.00 a year off of adsense and only worked a few hours a week in Vancouver and the top job there was for a couple of girsl to remove inappropriate photos uploaded to the dating website

Also talked about his strategic thinking and love for the game of Risk and ability to solve difficult coding problems. That was back in late 2008/2009 when the feature came out.

Good for them on the sell, I think the timing is goddamn perfect, and the fact that he never sucked a single investor's dick is brilliant. Good shit.

i think he got shortchanged. 2014 revenue was estimated at $100m. margins are presumably huge.

he probably was rich enough and just wanted to retire and do nothing

i always wondered how POF got initial 'traction' (to use that faggoty word)? was it just the only 100% free dating site around back in the day?

I never understood envy or jealousy. As someone else here said; jealousy is the mark of a loser. But I understand admiration and inspiration. It's great to feel inspired by something like this.

I seem to recall that it was - I'd dabbled on a couple of dating sites back then, and POF was the first free one of any substance that I saw.

Also believe he was flipping a LOT of his early profit right back into advertising, which supercharged its growth.

Two key things.

1. Started in one GEO and grew there before trying to expand out.

2. Spammed the hell out of CL to get started (just like AirBnB)

I dunno I think after seeing how quickly Tinder came out of no where and grabbed a ton of business anyone in the dating space would be scared about easy it could be become irrelevant within a few years.

Additionally I think owing a dating site could have some bad times over the next 5 years. The SJW and legal climate just isn't headed to a friendly place for someone that owns a dating website IMHO. Specially when it's one guy and an easy "target". Markus is very smart to grab the money now and slink into obscurity instead of giving himself the opportunity to become a big SJW target in the future potentially.

Coincidentally - re: SJW (social justice warrior) and legal climate - as I was looking for a news link for the OP, spotted the below news that was reported about a week earlier.

Not sure how PoF could have any responsibility for this. any more than CL could be blamed for the Craigslist Killer, but we're in a pretty litigious society - especially in the States - so perhaps it's a good idea to diversify ownership a bit.
