I think you'll find that the "foreign nationals" concerned were EU citizens. There is no restriction on EU nationals coming here for work (and due to the troubles in the eurozone, they are flooding in). There is a points system for people outside the EU.

The other point to make is that Britain has a population of 63 million, and London's population is 7 million. Pretending that London is the majority of Britain is mathematically incorrect!

Lets put it this way - thanks to the low amount of ethnic minorities and very high rates of assimilation, I'm willing to bet that Britain in 100 years time is very similar to now, but the USA will have changed out of all recognition...

B. That said, yes, there is some truth in that. However it's mainly Eastern Europeans from the newly expanded EU. A lot of foreign nationals do low-paid menial jobs that Brits won't do - if you look at the cleaning squads on public transport, very few of them are British.

At the higher end, we do hire professionals (IT, architects, doctors) etc from outside the UK, mainly because we don't have the skills here. That's a problem with our education system. Too many Brits think "media studies" is a useful thing to do at University.

In Britain, it's class not race that divides people. If you are the right class, doors open for you regardless of your ethnicity and if you are the wrong class, doors shut regardless of ethnicity. Sooner of later people figure this out and "marry into" a level up. The Middletons are a classic case in point. On her mothers side, Kate Middleton has a bit of mining background, plus a bit of Jewish background. So if we still have a monarchy in a 100 years time, the king will be a descendant of a miner and a descendant of Jewish immigrants, as well as descendants of the other kings from his father.

Can't see that happening elsewhere. Look at the fuss people made about Obama for goodness sakes. I guess the Earl of Liverpool would really have shocked Americans back in the early 19thC if they'd known his roots!

My wife, and mother-in-law are from an upper middle class Bangladeshi background - grandfather was Brigadier, loads of the family are professors and doctors.

My own mother ( a wonderful, kind-hearted woman, who unfortunately reads the Daily Mail and therefore has some very strange ideas about 'foreigners') suggested that my MiL might want to live in a certain area because there were lots of Bangladeshis there.

You should have seen the look of horror on my MiL's face. She has no interest in living with a load of lower class Bangladeshi people, any more than I'd want to live on a council estate with a load of chavs, just because they happen to be white.

Where you went to school is a lot more important than what colour you are in Britain.

The more contact I've had with Americans the more I realise that you guys have a MUCH bigger thing about race than we do. As teatree said, we're far more class-conscious.

(I have a lot of friends from different ethnic backgrounds, but I have very few friends from different social classes. That's fairly typical.)

Yup. And also who you marry. Take IDS - his route to the top echelons of teh Tory party was to marry the daughter of a baronet, which immediately cancelled out his lower-middle class background, lack of university degree and Japanese grandmother!

There are some things I'm worried about coming from Islam. Not actually things I see in TV or read in newspapers but words coming from Muslims I know personally. Some of these words/beliefs are simply shocking, especially that they come from people with good jobs, educated in UK.

Still, I believe Western culture is simply too attractive and new generations of Muslims will be hooked up with Western values. I know Muslims who show up different face in front of their friends and different, religious, to their families. Similar process was visible in my native Poland where younger generation almost totally rejected Catholicism but was still marrying in churches, baptizing children and so forth only to satisfy older generation.

But who knows, maybe I'm just an optimist.

I met educated Muslims who were happy of the fact bodies of American soldiers were dragged by a car.

I met educated Muslim who said recent murder of Iraqi-born British family in French Alps is a fault of America.

I met educated Muslim who told me to fuck off of his religion while I was trying to point that BBC program about Polish and Ukrainian hooligans was as biased as many information about Muslims.

I could continue for a long while. In the other hand I met cool Muslims who fully assimilated with Western world. Really cool guys and girls. I just hope future belongs to them, not fanatics.

So does Pat hate child abuse or rape? A quick look at his over 100 videos would suggest that religion in itself poses the biggest danger to society by far.

Despite there being millions of Muslims in the US and UK, the odds are extremely low of getting stoned to death or being the victim of a terror attack. On the other hand, there are over 100,000 child abuse and rape cases every year in those countries. Pat doesn't seem to spend much time worrying about that though, but maybe he does if it involves a Catholic Priest.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this one bro. That's exactly how I feel too. Young Muslims, regardless of how religious their parents were/are, almost always end up preferring western values... like studying to get a good job, partying, showing interest in technology, fashion, music, art, traveling, etc...

It's the older ones (aka those that leave their country after 40, more or less) that are most likely to turn extremist because they realize that life is tough working minimum-wage jobs (their foreign diplomas not being recognized) + dealing with the occasional racist comments about their accents/looks/culture etc... anger starts to build up as they realize that they will always be foreigners regardless of how hard they try...

Totally agree religion is the problem. but as it stands now Islam is the worst. Woman are treated as subhuman shit, science and progress halted and countless other problems Islam causes.
Its even possible Arab countries could have been as advanced as Japan/US/Europe ect had it not been for Islam.

If you follow progress of European and Arab countries through centuries you will see that for centuries development had similar pace in both areas. The difference became significant when Christians dropped literal interpretation of a Bible while Islam did not do the same with Koran.

All religious extremism causes deaths.

The total casualties from Northern Ireland's crackpot Protestant v Catholic wars (where they were repeatedly re-enacting the Battle of the Boyne, which took place in 1690) was 3526 people. More than the deaths in 9/11, and a pretty big % of the total population, given we are just 63 million. Deaths from islamic terrorism stand at 51.

Incidentally, while the whole of Europe banned the IRA and all financing of them decades ago (including the Irish Republic, which was thoroughly fed-up with the nutters in the north), the USA continued to allow funding right up till 9/11 happened. I guess it was one of those votes-for-terrorism arrangements that Congress loves so much where they think they'll get elected if they nod and wink at terrorism abroad. It stopped because when Bush asked for our help in using bank laws to cut money flows to Al Queda and all such terrorist groups, we said, what a good idea, what's the hold-up on you doing the same with the IRA again?

And you still haven't learnt your lesson as you are continuing the votes-for-terrorism thing with the Israeli lobby (and make no mistake the religious nutters in Israel are pretty much the same as in N.I. and Saudi). It'll back-fire on you badly at some point. I think Americans are in much more danger from all sorts of religious nutters than we are, because at least here we don't encourage religion, the whole of society is geared to weaning people off it.

....Funny you should mention Al Jazeera. Have you noticed that although the Western news channels use their footage a hell of a lot (learn what their logo looks like, and look for it) they only mention them by name when it's about terrorists sending footage to them?

While they definitely have their problems (another government owned news station) and are still fairly biased (although, imo, less so than BBC/CNN) they do genuinely practice investigative journalism. For example, while the BBC journalists were talking from their hotel rooms while wearing flak jackets (genuinely saw this) Al Jazeera were actually in the midst of it all, and almost all the footage the Western news channels used was Al Jazeera's.
