Old news, but still interesting to think about (mobile)

Oh, I'm all about mobile opportunity. I just don't see it becoming dominant, but I see it as important.

It'll be dominant by the fact that mobile traffic will surpass Desktop traffic. So, naturally, when people want to shop they'll start using their mobile/tablet since its more readily available.

Your response sounds like all those critics back in 1996, "yeah, people are going to surf the internet, but they would NEVER place their credit card information into a website, they'll just pick up the phone to call in and order, online shopping will never catch on." What can those people say now?

Some of you people still think in your "desktop brain". Like, people are going to be un-comfortable doing all that typing. Well, there is room for a voice autofill app right? ;)

As well, most of these youngsters have grown-up on these mobile devices, so typing for them on the mobile is relatively easy. They don't mind it as much, as someone who knew what it was like to not even have a mobile phone, or even the internet readily accessible. The older you get, the weirder it seems that the new technologies are more helpful. Study your demo, if you have a younger audience you can get away with mobile credit card processing more than you realize. If you have an older audience, you're conversions are going to be more desktop based. If you have a really older audience, be prepared to speak to them on the phone. Understand?

General Checkout Conversion Rate:
To increase general conversion rates, how about you don't ask for information that is completely un-necessary. I mean, why the fuck would I need to give you my birth date to place an order? If you want to survey your customers, do it after I'm a customer, and give me a 5% discount on my next order for filling out your survey, and then I'll be more willing to give you my date of birth. Some of the forms I see are pretty ridiculous, Phone #1, Phone #2, Mobile, Fax (really fax?).

P.S. This thread had great potential until Zsaleem fucked it up. People like him that have nothing to contribute but stupid shit in a good thread are the reason no one serious is going to continue posting in this thread, even though it was an excellent topic. OP's fault though was he posted it in STS.

CCarter nailed it, but to further address your comment above; it's already dominant in some places. Mobile use has already surpassed the 50% point in the UK, with users in the 17-25 age group embracing it the most. It's also surpassed the 50% point in India. Developing countries will probably lead this trend because people in those places don't all have computers and internet at home, but a large number have mobile phones. It's only a matter of time before it happens everywhere else.

I concur and dispensed the red bricks accordingly. I encourage y'all to do the same.

PS: Sorry bros. Mods if you read it, please delete my two of the above posts, I'll make sure to post ponies in useless threads only.

PS2: I ruined it at first hand because it's a paid spam by BrainTreePayments, I've got many such propaganda style articles posted on Forbes and sites as such, so I'm not inclined to believe them at first. But yeah, I do realize I messed up with the debate it triggered. /rant.

Look forward to your next update. ;)

research shows that conversions and checkout funnel abandonment rises by like 10-15% with each additoinal piece of information required on the checkout form... so be careful. I just want them to give me their address and credit card info and get checkout with the least amount of steps.

What I do is get all that additional information after they checkout. Ask them to make sure their information is up to date, "in case we need to contact them". Once they bought, they are more willing to open up their information to you, since they now trust you.

At least in the US - very few are actually using a credit card to buy on their phone, unless its amazon on your tablet and a few other exceptions - main stream america will do their research on their phone and either go to their PC or drive to Walmart to purchase. Similarly, why not many are buying insurance, refi their home, change cable companies - mobile is still a "impulse buy"....most people are not making major decisions on their phones.......yet

Did you even read the fucking thread? We just discussed this shit. Saying stupid shit just to get your post numbers up creates noise. Plus you bumped a 2 month old thread. Strong 3rd post from a 2010 account.

Man, old Wickedfire accounts must be going like hotcakes to spammers.

Very interesting topic - despite the ancient thread going all the way back to early April :) I'm working on taking two ecommerce sites (one Magento, one OpenCart) kicking and screaming into the new world of 2013.

One issue with apps that needs to be addressed is the growing number of installed apps, and dealing with user resistance to more. I've read recently (no source, sorry) that the average smartphone user has 26 apps installed. If that's correct, and that's an average, where is the trend going?

Are people still actually debating whether mobile devices are important or not in online marketing or not? Fucking hell!
