I get your point luke, guess I just think they'd make the choice that was best for their customers. Some businesses are like that. But at the same time they are leaving the door open for some new kid on the block that could, theoretically, offer twice the efficiency they do. I'm not saying it would be easy, or a guaranteed battle, but it's a way in, and against the big intrust.
You have to remember, most of the US powergird is WAY old tech. If they had a reasonable, affordable way to update it, I don't see how they couldn't. Doubling your power output is HUGE!
