So they destroy South Korea's ship and THEN threaten war? Why the foreplay? Can somebody just nuke this hellhole already?

Every single soldier and citizen in North Korea is expendable in the eyes of Kim Jong Il, it's an army of suicide bombers.
The U.S. would lose thousands to possibly tens of thousands of soldiers (the 4th Infrantry Division on the DMZ fighting off the first waves), and there would probably thousands and more likely tens of thousands of South Korean citizens and soldiers.
You are right, North Korea would be sunk, but it would be the very definition of a Pyrrhic victory.

Going to war with SK nowadays seems like suicide. The national sport is starcraft, they're all war experts and closet 5 star generals.

Heh, you beat me to it. I've seen the numbers as high as 14,000 but it's agreed it's well over 10,000 artillery pieces pointed at Seoul. The city could be flattened in just a few minutes and there's no way to take them all out quick enough to stop it, unless the aforementioned nuke is employed which isn't going to happen.
