New Years Resolutions?

So, I was just stating that your statement is inconsistent with your actions. Which makes it ad hominem tu qouque.
But it isn't. There is a market for everything (long tail theory). That doesn't presume that because I don't engage in each and every market, those markets without my participation do not exist.

This is a really boring discussion, because regardless of whether it is abusive or tu qouque (it is in fact a strawman argument due to your assumptions) your argument is still a fallacy.

I can think of a lot of good reasons to thread jack, but this isn't one of them. PM me if you want to carry this on.

OK, so here is my goal setting process (maybe a guideline for others?)

I identified 6 areas in my life (you might arrive at different number or areas)

  • Family
    • My family (wife and I)
    • Bigger family (mine and that of my wife)
  • Health
    • Sports
    • Nutrition
    • Ailments
  • Finances
    • Monthly Budgeting
    • Planning / Future
  • Work
    • Day Job
    • Entrepreneurial
  • Mind
    • Skills and Education
  • Social
    • Friends and Events

For each of these areas (and sub areas) I define even further topics.

For example, Finances > Planning / Future consists of

  • Retirement
  • Savings
  • Ivestments
Once I have that tree all set up in detail, I begin defining goals.

For each area, I define big 2010 Goals, to be reached by the end of 2010.
These are big, hairy monster goals. A bit of fuzziness comes with the territory. Here you will find vague descriptions like "get fit".

That done, I will define the goals for the first quarter, or Q1.

This is where I set precise goals, defined by the SMART method.
SMART Goal Setting: a surefire way to achieve your goals.

This is not to say I am not planning for longer periods of time, but I believe that planning actionable and measurable goals for longer than three months is futile.

Why?

Your whole world can (and will) shift in 3 months, so this is my review point.

Have fun setting your sights on 2010. :food-smiley-002:

Good luck everybody with your personal goals. The quote I always keep in mind is, "A goal without a plan is just a wish."

Mine is to get up every day and be a little better than I was the day before. There is a specific plan being scratched out.

I need to begin living my life with a greater purpose. One of my best friends passed away this morning, and it's devastated me completely. He's leaving behind a wife and two young kids, and he was only in his early 30's.

For 2010 I'm resolving to take better care of my health, spending more time with my wife and son, and stop non-productive activities that don't bring in more money into my household.

I can't take care of the people I want to by sitting on my ass bullshitting anymore.

2010 is a new start for my life.

Sorry about your loss. Print that post out and keep it where you can see it every day. It's rare to get enough clarity to make realizations like this so it's important to hang on it to and stay reminded.

Try not to become a man of success but rather to become a man of value. (Albert Einstein)

If you can, help others. If you cannot do that, at least do not harm them. (Dalai Lama)

I'll try to stick to these as a good start in 2010.

Good stuff.

Keep on living by these three rules,

2010 will be a great year.

I'm not an optimist by nature but I've been working on it lately. I'll probably fuck it up, though.

Life's what happens when you're making other plans. Still, it's good to have a long-term set of goals, all the while understanding that they're subject to change.
