New Trend in Web Design

One point to consider; these slideshow/carousel things let you stuff more content on the page without requiring that extra screen real estate.

I think the sliders are better for sites where there is multiple products/services being offered, but also niche dependant. If your writing about just one thing then it really doesnt serve its purpose all that well.

But like it has been said, its all about testing and who knows maybe the carousels will start converting better as the trend picks up steam.

I think it depends on the goal of the site. If it's "landing page" with the sole objective to convert and funnel the visitor somewhere, then distracting him with a carousel is probably not a good idea. On the other hand if it's a full blown corporate brand website with main goals being branding and corporate identity, the fresh look of the carousel may be a very good thing. It may also work well for a content site.

These carousels are useful only on portfolio sites.
A professional could think to display his latest works.

From a IM perspective carousels on home page or landing pages are a fail-fail situation:
- JavaScript is obtrusive then more loading time;
- Pages are too heavy (don't forget 50K limit);
- Rotating images are eyes distracting then no call to action;

Test what works best against site goals and STFU. That is all.

That is all, yeah.

(In theory the problem with the carousel is that you're letting the prospect think about too many things at once rather than persuade them to think about and move toward your goal. The thing does look professional, but there's obviously more you want from your website than to look professional. Anybody can make it look professional in 2010.)
