No, not negative SEO, negative traffic. :bigear: :bigear: :bigear:

So I have a product page that has been doing very well for the past year or so, not making me a ton, but its been stable. Traffic source is SEO and I am ranked for the main product keyword(s) as well as a ton of long tails.

Recently I've started seeing a TON of "mykeyword complaints" and "mykeyword scam" coming in on my analytics, and as of today it has climbed to the 5th most popular keyword, (about 300 ppl landed this week as a result of the kwd) - I dont know maybe there was some negative press recently or something.

Anyway, I built a generic inner page lander and managed to get it ranked for the kwd - but it's not performing as well as I would like.

Question: any of you have experience with optimizing a page for this, or have you seen a brand optimize a page for this that did an amazing job?

bump

anyone?

how to optimize for "blue widgets scam" or "red widgets complaints" when receiving a ton of traffic for it...

currently i just have a sales page with copy addressing any problems with answers that go against it....

Without knowing more info. it may be hard to comment with good feedback, but from my experience, ive seen the negative traffic convert along the lines of: DONT USE XYZ UNTIL YOU READ THIS! And then a whole page that ultimiately ends up pitching the users to actually USE XYZ and another product together (2 step process), for optimial results. The negative marketing definitely works great, just think through your sales copy a bit more. Take a look around at some of the diet campaigns you see for better ideas.

If you construct it properly, a PR distribution related to the scam with a couple good anchors would kill it

Edit: Sorry, I'm a little confused - Are you asking about optimizing for the keyphrase strings or monetizing the traffic you are getting?

Apparently you have never ranked a site targeting "Product Scam".., which is the first domain name that gets registered for any new offers that come up..

Why don't you just tweak the same page that is already ranking 5..

Use the work "Product Scam" maybe in bold, and go on to bash some competing product for scamming gullible consumers, while softly promoting your offer.

thanks all - i had a feeling it would come down to writing better copy, as it usually does.

scattered: im talking about monetizing the traffic i am already getting.

blogspotter: thats the thing i am ranking two of my sites in the top 3 for it. you say bash the competition i suppose i could split test it for a week.

i really hate using SEO as a traffic source because split testing ad copy can result in rankings lost/gained blahhhh

pm me if anyone sees any great examples of people optimizing for this, particularly in the health/beauty niche...

Are there other reviews out there (positive) that are not marketing this product directly? Aggregating those to the pages your complaint and scam traffic are seeing may sway them.

Not all kws convert the same. User intent is a large part of being able to pick and focus on well performing kws.
