My daughter knocked my old Dell laptop off a table and it's been laid to rest, so I need a decent, inexpensive, (but reliable) laptop that I can take on the road with me a few times a year. Something sub-$500 would be ideal if possible. Lighter is better. I'm not up on laptop tech whatsoever, so if I could get a few reco's to look into, that would be swell. Happy New Years.

I'm a big fan of ASUS stuff, here is the stuff sorted by popularity under $500 from tigerdirect (no idea if this is a good site or not, but it sounds familiar).

It'd probably go with something that has a SSD as I am currently upgrading my ASUS to have one.

Maybe: ASUS S56CA-WH31 Ultrabook - 3rd generation Intel Core i3-3217U 1.8GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD + 24GB SSD, DVDRW, 15.6 Display, Windows 8 64-bit, Black at TigerDirect.com ?

PS: +1 for the chromebook.

Would a chrome book work for you? Honestly we are putting a bunch of people in our office on them, and they do everything THEY need.

By the way, OP, what will you do with it on the road? Maybe netbook would suffice? They are small and light, very cool to travel with.

$400 all day long, new/used. HP doesn't stock them anymore, check eBay, etc.. Love mine, does everything I need, runs 1080p movies, etc. Not so great for video editing but still works fine. Aluminum casing and core, HDMI, chick let keyboard, etc... Also I travel with mine daily, constantly getting moved around, never had any issues at all, has been 3+ years and counting.
