Naturally, it happens on Christmas day right before the Chargers / Titans game..If this had happened a few weeks ago, I probably could have picked up a kick ass LCD for peanuts. It's a 5 year old 42" LG Plasma that has a bright red vertical bar on the left side of the screen...really annoying. I'm not sure I want to waste the money to get it fixed. Thinking of checking out a 50' LCD but hoping to keep it in the $1000 range. Found this Samsung at BestBuy

Samsung - 50" Class / 1080p / 600Hz / Plasma HDTV - PN50B550T2F

Wondering if you all have any suggestions on one's to check out.

Sorry, that was the wrong link. Actually 46" to 50" LCD is what I'm after. I don't give a shit about the 120 refresh rate..I've read it's not even noticeable.

120? The LCD 36" we picked up over thanksgiving was a 5ms refresh rate, anything under 25 seems to be suitable even for 1080i (meaning if you can't afford 1080p, you probably won't mind 720p up-sampled to 1080i, course in the 50"+ range, could matter).

I don't need 120hz...60hz is fine.

This 46" Sony has pretty damn good reviews. It's 120hz, but it doesn't have too many user complaints that I can find. I've had Sony's in the past and they've been pretty solid. I guess I'm just sweating buying another tv and having it take a shit in 5 years. That get's old quick.

if you can afford it, pickup a LED. the quality/contrast ratio is fucking amazing. especially if you watch alot of sports.

with that said, as far as brands, I would go pioneer or samsung for your tv. anything else and you will hate yourself, trust me. unless you are getting a REALLY good deal price wise on the TV and dont really give a shit about the quality.

Go with the 120. It makes a difference with fast motion.

The LCD's Samsung are putting out right now are awesome. They consistently look better than anything else when you compare them in the stores.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Samsung LCD's right now. Just picked up a great Samsung 40" at Sams for the kid's TV area and I friggin love this thing. I'm going to pick up a larger one for mommy and daddy soon.

Samsung at Amazon.

LCD are digital technology they don't go by hz except in the DAC, you want to look at milisecond refresh.

Don't be silly.. Hz's (refresh rate) and ms (response time) are two completely separate things. As long as your not using the thing for gaming and the ms isn't over ~10 or so you won't notice a difference.

120hz is more for the dvd viewing side of things. Help's with screen "judder".

P.S.

Here's an awesome 46" LED for right around 1000.

That Samsung PN50B550 is a very nice 1080p 50" plasma TV at a great price.

I would not buy LCD over Plasma. Visit a home theater type forum and see which is recommended more.

LED TV is just a marketing name for LCD panels with LED backlighting.

My folks have a 56" Hitachi Plasma, weighs like 250lbs, and they can verify that like many other plasma owners, the screen brightness does fade over time as well as having an image burn-in. LCD is the better way to go, and LED even more so not to mention far more energy efficient.

That's correct, as it can produce a much more even and brighter backlight, and do so with less energy than a typical LCD. Doesn't devalue it's benefits just because they decided not to say "LCD w/ LED backlight". Course least Apple is actually saying it correctly when they talk about their newer crisper LCD screens on the macbooks and iMacs.

+1 Samsung , I'm not a fan of Sony though, more based on support of Company policy than product.

Also to add, when it comes to CRT (Cuz hrz doesn't impact LCD[they stay lit, until they get the command to change, unlike CRT that use 'refresh rates' to update the whole screen every time]), if you don't think 120hz is noticeable you ever wonder why people on computers get some serious eye strains at 60-80hz , and then its all 'better' once they get it over 100?
