Must haves for mobile/traveling lifestyle and AM

I wasn't referring to your post (already checked your link :D). I just regret not having dropped affiliate links in my first reply, at the prime 4th-post position..

ha, I didnt read the article but I just starting using Truecrypt.

I guess its better then not having anything though for most cases.

How about a 7inch galaxy tab? Very convenient for travel- fits in a large pocket. Good for email/browsing/apps/games/reader and can even be used as an emergency phone if you don't plan on making many calls (or there is a cheaper version without phone in it). I took my small laptop too when traveling recently but never took it out of my room thanks to the tab.

I used to travel with a top of the line, bulky high-end laptop that could do most anything I could do from my desktop. I quickly realized an important truth:

You really don't want to drag a 10 pound giant brick around with you on vacation for the 1 random thing you need its full functionality for. You end up leaving it at the hotel, or not bothering to power up cuz "I'm only going to be at this coffee shop for 10 minutes, etc" Most of us need a browser, access to email, and our important files handy, that's it.

I then just started traveling with a) A cheapy small netbook with cam, mic, and solid state drive that is hella portable and fires up fast B) a multi-band phone/blackberry and c) a 3-g enabled iPad. This way I've got 3 different redundant points to access the Internet in 95% of situations, I can do the majority of what I can do at my office, and the few giant projects that need more computing power are probably not something I should be trying to do while traveling anyways. All 3 things are very portable (I can carry them in the pockets of cargo shorts if I really want) and I can do almost any daily task necessary from them from almost anywhere in the world I've been. YMMV

I know a lot of you guys travel/are mobile/are not behind a "normal" desk everyday.

I am looking into traveling a lot coming up and would like to preplan out my "must have's" to make this happen without a ton of headache.

Here is what I have so far:

1. Laptop
2. USB Modem ( for 3g wireless ) + cell phone for tethering
3. VNC connections to servers/home desktops/home laptops
4. Looking at Evernote or some kind of mobile note taking platform.

Can you guys think of anything else that you like to have or must have while traveling and being mobile?

Thanks ahead of time.

Absolutely sick app, I'd honestly be lost without it.

I ended up getting rid of the USB modem. Even though I travel, I found a lot of times I wasnt in a 3g hotspot, so any DL'ing of stuff or surfing was a joke on the Edge Network.

I also found out tons of wireless hotspots are around, and if I cant find one thats OK, but there is always SOME PLACE that will have it within a 5-10 mile radius of me and I can there for a few if its that bad.

The laptop I have been using is a Macbook Pro, and once you lock that shit down right, 90% of the normal script kiddies just cant get into it ( like when your at a hotel and using their hotspot ).

VNC has been a god send, and having a VPS too is awesome.

I signed up to Evernote and I have dropbox on all my machines. I am also using Firefox Sync which has been awesome as well. Truecrypt has been a nice thing as well

If you will be gone for an extended period I can recommend earthclassmail.com for mail processing/scanning. Used them for a few years now with no issues.

Also phone.com for virtual number / call forwarding. You can have calls to your US number forwarded to local sims and landlines anywhere in the world.
