Media Buying, Ask Me Anything

I'm starting out in media buying.

Is using Sitescout's ad server going to be sufficient?

At what point in time should we be considering going more
advanced, and which ad server would you recommend?

(I'm a WRW customer, good job!)

So the beginner should go where in order to get remnant traffic ?

Adbuyer if you're looking for network remnant, sitescout if you wanna buy direct. These networks are both self serve and take a cut, once you figure out what's working you could cut them out and go direct.

What's an ad server? When would you need one? And how much do they cost?

An adserver is a system that serves out ads and then defines metrics about them.

You'd need one if you were doing direct site buys to rotate banners and offers easily or if you're doing network buys and don't want to wait for their internal team to do it for you.

Cost varies, most have an upfront fee and then a monthly fee which includes a certain number of impressions and then a CPM fee if you exceed those impressions. Could also be free like openx.

I personally used Zedo, but didn't love it, then used SiteScout and loved it.

Along the same lines as this. Did you have an adserver from the get go and have you seen a big discrepancy in billing #'s between your own adservers #'s and the #'s of the network?

I had one starting when I started to do real volume in media buying and direct buys as well. I sometimes saw a huge discrepancy, so I made sure in my IOs to put they bill off MY numbers, as it saved me a ton of cash.

Sitescout's adserver is awesome and should be 100% fine for everything to be honest.

How come? Anything I should know about advertising on FB? Are they harder to make money from?

No they are not, they're a different beast but there's so much traffic. We do not for TOS reasons, we like not getting sued...

yeah +rep for sure

how do you feel that yousif & eagle's drama is hijacking your TOP FERP position in the AM subforum?

No clue what you're talking about, drama is unproductive to making money.

your opinion on doubleclick?

and adtech as a a publisher and as an advertiser?

Publisher as in website owner, I never have been one. As an aff, I'd be a advertiser, and doubleclick has great inventory same with ad tech, but their approvals are strict so it severely limits what you can run there.

Are there any CPA networks that you would suggest a media buyer consider to join or focus their traffic on?

Great thread and great answers so far.

My Q's:

1. For those starting out, what's the minimum monthly budget required to realistically get into media buying (not just for ad spend but for all expenses related to the craft such as ad servers, creatives, LPs, WRW subscription, etc.)?

2. With the intel that WRW provides, do you see affiliates being able to effectively reduce the amount of time/money spent on testing for campaigns to determine profitability or would you, if you were still doing affiliate marketing, keep your minimum test creatives, LPs, etc. as if WRW did not exist?

3. What are your recommended/favorite resources to become as proficient as possible in media buys (books/ebooks/courses/forums/sites/etc.)?

Are Carne Asada Fries or a California Burrito better?

XMCP would have to answer that.... I am the resident subway expert.

The one with a rep you trust to hook you up, and you've worked with for a while and know will pay would be good ;)

1. You could realistically start with around $1,000 to start doing small direct buys and learning. If you wanna start doing network buys, 5-10k.

2. Absolutely, thats the whole point. Giving people the ability to launch campaigns with an edge so they spend less on testinga nd find winners faster. When we were developing it we made a ton by running campaigns using intel in there as a starting point and working off it.

3. To be honest, other people. You learn a ton from others if you befriend them and work with them. They have real experience and not just cut and dry stuff in a book. Most of what I learned was from friends and trial and error.

So when starting out on a small budget would you recommend sticking to small direct buys or buying placements on sites like SiteScout? SiteScout have said that they often see affiliates drop out after starting a bunch of failed campaigns, so I'm wondering where to search for that first profitable media buying campaign.

Small direct buys or small placements that you can get at budget rates from sitescout. Working on making those work at small margins and volume and scaling from there.

Thank you for the answers to my other questions.

Another one: what are the three most common reasons people fail at affiliate marketing media buys?

I don't know about most common, but lack of funds, lack of knowledge about how to buy or where to buy and lack of trying (not starting to buy in the first place). As lame as it sounds, you can't succeed if you don't try.
