He made his sites huge easily because he did it earlier than than the rest, when there was the time... now it's not 1996-1999 anymore. Nothing is impossible of course, but what if he stared now, with the same amount of money... ?

Can't disagree with that. Try starting another Sitepoint today. Being the first is a common theme from a lot of online business success.

That being said, a lot of people that start something early and have huge success end up squandering what they made in their next business. They're overconfident and they end up getting burned. It seems like Matt has multiplied his success.
