Massive Authority Site around a Subject?

I've had some online success with niche sites and a web app. But I want to go big.

How viable is it to create a massive authority site around a certain subject. For example, creating a site around "the outdoors" which would encompass hiking, camping, kayaking, rock climing, RVing, sailing, etc.

Assuming my top 100 keywords target 2.6 million exact monthly searches and long tail is in the 10's of millions.

This is a subject I could see myself writing about for several years, with plenty of monetization possibilities from affiliates and e-commerce.

Would you recommend pursuing such a venture? What must I look at to determined if this is a good idea?

HUGE job mate and something that you're going to need more than yourself working on to pull off. Remember, if you want to keep readers from all those niches interested, you've got to be producing relevant content that covers every niche on a very consistent basis.

I'm just starting to move from one sub-section of a niche into a bigger playing field and I've taken on 5 part-time writers to till and keep up with demand.

If you think you can do it on your own whilst also managing marketing, administration, and development, then I wish you all the best but I would HIGHLY recommend thinking about everything that will need to be done and how you plan to manage all of it before you launch in head first.
