A client wants to host a small webstore (around 100 products) with a very small customerbase at this moment. Since it will take a while to start rolling, a VPS-hosting seems like a overkill to start with. From what i read on the Magento forums the biggest concern on Magento sites is the CPU and RAM of the server.

Can anyone recommend me a American hosting service that is able to run the website for atleast the first couple of months and has the option to upgrade to VPS?

I'd start out with a VPS and then determine if downgrading is an option later. Time is money so if you think saving $200/year going with an el cheapo shared plan is worth your time good luck. Magento is a pig when it comes to cpu resources, it's even slow on a localhost IMO.

Look into Magento Go as a hosted offering.

I Think Its Better To Opt Godaddy To Fulfill All Your Requirement and It Performs Better . Check it Out All The Best

magento is a hog. I don't think you'll like it on less than a VPS. I started on a VPS and was disappointed with how slow it was. Soon as my sales could sustain it, I migrated that sucker over to a dedicated.

I have limited knowledge on servers and there capabilities at this time, but I do own and run a magento cart. Its been hell to put it mildly. If you want a heads up on the consistent on going issues the site has had and is having feel free to PM me.

Cant recommend any that fit your requirements, but Magento is one hell of a resource hog! I've had opencart/etc running fine on my hosting, tried Magento and it felt a hell of a lot slower.

I would recommend starting with VPS as magento can be a resource hog as mentioned. We can help you get setup with a VPS plan that will have an easy upgrade path for you as your business needs grow.

VPS for sure, unless you can afford a Dedicated. Dedicated servers are a lot faster. Google and you customers will appreciate a site that loads faster.

Definitely need to agree with iBroke on this one. I have run several shopping systems before, but I experienced a new level of software stupidity once "the management" decided to switch to Magento.

If the customer is adamant, so be it. If it is install-and-walk-away, so be it. But if your reputation is on the line, do the research and recommend just about any other system.

:crap:

TVCNet for a few dollars a month should fit the bill and they include free malware scanning. If you can afford a couple cups of coffee a month to sell your 100 products online try out TVCNet.

I really like Crucial Web Hosting been using them for a couple years. You want a Magento-specific host, not some run-of-the-mill shared hosting plan. Magento needs a LAMP stack, php caching and some database configuration options to run well.

I have also heard Rated #1 Fastest PHP 5 Web Hosting in U.S.A, Magento Hosting, SSD Hosting, Zend Framework Hosting, Joomla Hosting, Wordpress Hosting is good.
crucial web hosting is good, or the other choice webhostingbuzz is also great. it depends.

I'm a professional Magento developer. Go with a hosting company that specializes in Magento and optimizes their servers for it - Nexcess.net or MageMojo. Then you'll want to find speed optimization guides and install extensions like full page caching. With a beefy server, full page caching, JS/CSS minification, and flat catalog + compilation your store will be very fast.
