Try harder.

SEO isn't easy. Sometimes you need some luck, and a lot of luck.

I was spending money for one and half year, before seeing any significant profit. Perseverance is the key. Learn when to let go, try different niches. Once you find that one that works, go all in, and you will realize that you can earn more in one month than all the past years combined.
 


ok, so today (06/14/13) I did some things, not too much though.
1. Got about 10-20 backlinks on 2 sites
2. Made 3 videos (2 for one website, 1 for another), and published them on YouTube (different YT accounts, etc).
3. Wrote good long articles (600-800 words), with actual, useful content.
All in all, I'd say that everything was done with high "quality", and I did about 4 hours or so of work (good videos take a while IMO). So some tips for others:
a) USE VIDEO IN EVERY POST IF YOU CAN!! Video > text, put your text for the SE (still gear it towards humans of course)
b) maybe cite things (have some OBL on your post/article)
c) this is probably common knowledge, but if you are using a blog or something where you have a "tags" section, put long tail keywords in there
 
Wowza, I guess my YouTube video worked. I checked my stats when I woke up and I have more visits today, than in the previous month combined. YouTube is the #2 search engine in the world, folks.

I'm focused on this now. I figure I will put in a summers worth of work, and then my school year will be a breeze. I can treat myself to a video game, I can catch a good bus back home, I can pay for good food out on the town, or I can pay back some school loans that I've taken out.

10-20 backlinks from 2 sites? Were they decent backlinks in terms of PR? How did you get so many on somewhere decent? Paid them? or provided them with some content etc?

Could I see the video that you are using for youtube or are you keeping things secret from the WF'ers?

1. decent backlinks, wrote them on blogs (i used methods i've described above that involve SEOQuake browser add-on and then different types of specific google search terms to land me high pr links), and I got a few low OBL .edu from my current university's website (http://www.wickedfire.com/newbie-questions/173257-lyovas-journal.html#post2053497) important to note that i meant *FOR two websites
2. i go to university, and i know all of the blogs that auto accept on the student network, so i just write some comment and it gets accepted.
3. i paid for a list of links, but this was a while back, haven't used them
4. the youtube is secret, the funny thing is, the one that i took <30 minutes on (and is 1 minute long) is doing the best, the other youtube videos are 3-5minutes long, with special effects and nice design, along with good music, etc. i guess brevity > quality in my niche. I used sony vegas 8 for 2 of the videos, the other 1 (that is finding good traffic) was something i "warmed up" with on Windows Live Movie Maker.
an important thing to note about the youtube video: i made it about completely new content that i knew people would start searching for, and as far as i could tell, there were no other videos about it at that point. ex. say im trying to sell sony vegas 8, and 9 came out JUST 2 days ago. no videos on youtube about it yet, but i put 2 decent quality videos and because youtube is the #2 search engine, of course people will be searching for the video content just like a regular search engine, so i instantly am able to get hits.

Not looking to sell them :p, they aren't spammed (as of yet...) I'm sure someone will find them soon though. At my school everyone gets a free blog with their account, and there's a group on fb where people just share their blogs, so whenever an article pops up that I can comment on without my comment being deleted, i do that

Hey guys, I'm looking at a position to do basically writing for a site that does SEO, so I was curious if you guys think it's worth doing it, I fear it will burn me out from writing my own content, but it is a paid position... (pays 12/hr).

You began your first post with a complaint on your lack of money, and yet you have to ask if you should take a job?

A job is nothing more than a revenue source, and you seem to need it. Any extra cash you obtain should be reinvested into your future operations. Now to handle your concern about a "possible" burnout.

There is no question that you'll confront it, but building a business isn't a walk in the park. Being "burned-out" shouldn't be a concern. It should be used as fuel.

I'm fine with playing the waiting game for my websites in order to profit after the summer has finished, therefore I've changed my goal. It's no longer "I need money now", as opposed to "I'd like some money by the time college starts."

And the reason I feel I would burn out is because the content I write is usually very good, I'm not going to toot my own horn but I spend a good amount of time ensuring the articles I write are high quality. Therefore, if I was doing 30-40 hour work weeks just doing content generation and only getting 12/hr where I could potentially make more with my own content, it's a toss up between what is a destined outcome, or a risky outcome (aka, no job and I spend tons of time to make good content and create authority sites that could or could not give me a great return).

I spent today mostly doing content generation. I wrote 2 articles, 750+ word length each, with rich media, and I made 1 more YouTube video. One of my websites keeps getting pushed down in the SERPs, I'm not sure what I can do about that though. Trying to find more backlinks but I'm running out of ideas.

ok, so I basically decided on doing authority sites. I finally found out why one of my sites was ranking so well this past 4 years it's been up (#1 and hasn't moved for a specific keyword). It's an EMD but also an authority site. I was building authority sites in 2009 rofl. Anyway I guess I will focus on only authority sites and pump tons of time into quality content. Only problem is I'm having trouble deciding what niches aren't over saturated with authority sites at this point, and how to find things that I can write about that I enjoy.
 
ahh tomorrow i'm going to leave my house and walk around until i get inspiration for an authority site. been thinking all day with nothing to show (except one thing, but i feel like it would be over saturated).
 
so I played the waiting game and it paid off somehow, my youtube video is brining 300 UV/day and my content is getting ranked higher from google with no backlinks (only the youtube video lol).

i did find out what my fucking problem was: I can't work at home. I need to find somewhere else to work, and because I live in this stupid small rural town I can't really find a place. maybe in college I will be able to do classes + this. anyway I got my Dad to drive me to the library and I got about 11 articles written (800+ words) and posted them to drip from WP every 4 days. (this was across 2 sites). i think i will start branching out and just write 1 article a week on my sites, as they all went from 10-20 views a day to 100 views a day. they are starting to bring in decent cash.

I removed my adsense on all my sites because all they did was push content below the fold/make it harder to access content, and I only made like 3 bucks from 2 weeks of testing anyway.
 
also my conversion rate is 1.57% for one of my websites. need to split test to see what works best!
