So it seems like I have the worst luck with laptops and I'm in need of a new one. My macbook has crapped out and will not start up.

I'm looking to get a Nice new laptop that is not apple.

What would you guys get if you were shopping for a new one? I need some ideas.

Thanks.

The Lenovo is a great suggestion, so are the others. Side note Lenovo rep came in when I was with a large company making a big purchase of notebooks. They start the demo by taking a soda and pouring it over the Laptop. They proceed to finish the demo, all the suits loved it but apparently they are one of the few laptop makers at the time that seal the keyboard and components against liquid. At that time that was one of the most common reasons for failure outside of hardware components in a corporate enviroment.

I just got an HP Envy and I really like it so far.

my uncle has an hp also, not sure what exact model but the keyboard is perfect size and the screen is huge. hes had it for about a year and a half now no problems at all. good luck op

When searching for a Windows laptop I usually go with Lenovo. Very good value in my opinion, but since my main laptops are always Apple it's basically a backup. If you want to go really high dollar with it I'm guessing Sony's are near the top but I know IBM's are right up there if you don't mind the non-sexiness of them.

thinkpad all the way bro. most other brand laptop keyboards suck shit for typing. the guys who say HP is good haven't used a lenovo. no joke.

I'm also kind of surprised people are suggesting HP's. My experience with them has been horrible and most people I know feel the same. They seem to have nice features and look great out of the box but build quality is definitely lacking.

Nice pics from the OP by the way.

I'm a huge ThinkPad fan and wouldn't change it for anything else. It is not the best looking laptop but it is stable like a rock.

Lenovo makes nice notebooks, but I HATE their "Fn" key location. I often end up pressing "Fn" instead of "Ctrl" when trying to use keyboard shortcuts.

typing this with my new thinkpad (T510) that was delivered two hours ago. This is my third thinkpad as well. Its got a much better screen than the T61 i bought 2 years ago.

Lenovo is money. I don't have a thinkpad (Dell Vostro), but my Lenovo tower is great.

I've been a thinkpad man my whole life, till I got a macbook pro. Still have a T40 and a T60.

I <3 my X200. Also had a T30 for 5 years that was an absolute war-horse.

Thinkpads are built for everyday durability: rollcage in the lid, metal hinges for the screen, drop-sensor for harddrive heads, sealed keyboard, etc.

People always ask me how old my laptop is, even when it was brand new, but Lenovos aren't for looks. The X200 is a hell of a deal, too. It's got a beast of a processor, 4gbs of ram, and something like 8 hours of batt life (real-world) with the extended-battery. Without the battery it weighs 2.95 lbs or something.

I also looked at the X300 which has the SSD harddrive and is the Mac-Air competitor. It's are ultra-light and thin, but doesn't have the same performance and features of the 200 series. The choice is basically light vs. fast (like any laptop).

The biggest complaints I hear about the X200 is screen brightness (or dimness) and lack of a trackpad. I've never liked trackpads, and I love the trackpoint system on Thinkpads, so that's not a big deal for me. I find the screen brightness to be acceptable in 90% of situations, but there are times when it could brighter. Maybe find someone who has one and play around on it to see if the brightness is an issue for you.

My biggest complaint is trying to get the wlan card to play nice under Ubuntu. Windows 7 runs flawlessly on it, though, and I've just given up and installed Ubuntu on VMWare.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions on the X200.
