I tried learning some c++ on my own a couple of years ago and it helped me get the basics of php pretty quickly.

And even if you don't go into OOP and advanced programming, you can still do a lot with php/mysql and it largely depends on how creative you are.

can you use c++ on webhosts?

Check this out for C++ on websites here

In general though, compiled languages arent used on websites very much I dont think.

I don't think so, but I also don't think I have ever heard of anyone actually trying to use c++ for web related projects. It's mostly a matter of speed - the more "low-level" the language is, the faster the program will run.

The thing is, it's sometimes so much harder to do it in a lower level language, that the difference in speed - especially today when it's getting smaller and smaller as hardware is very fast compared to even a couple of years ago - is a good trade off.
