Keep Fighting Internet Blacklist Bill -- S.968

The article mentions that this bill would hurt job growth too. I'm curious as to how they arrived at this conclusion.

Anyone?

Really? Did you even read the article?

The bill creates a precident in allowing "ONE" person's office to control which sites are blocked and allows them to get involved in any lawsuit they deem worthy about "copyright infringement accusation" "WITHOUT" having to inform you first.

A company provides a little "proof" that something on a website is against their copyright, the AG tells the ISPs to block access to the site and "ANY" site "linking" to said copyrighted material (can you say blogs, company sites, social media, videos) is "REQUIRED" to take down the content and links.

Obvious misuse by big corporations to lobby their potential competition to being blacklisted aside, "ANY" site that makes some "mention"/"reference" to the "copyrighted work accusation" "MUST" be removed by "LAW". If you don't, then you get penalized.

Now, with all the user-generated and viral linking content out there that is pretty much "IMPOSSIBLE" to regulate, which will soon be "REQUIRED" to be regulated, you'll see a lot of large sites shutting down and small businesses as well under the brunt of the legislation when they are forced to comply - just because they can't afford to monitor everything.

That's where you lose jobs - sites closing, no need for employees and the supporting business' employees because their buyers and sellers are gone.

I can't understand how anyone who makes money on the internet is not completely fucking infuriated by this and the backlash is not already bigger. My guess is people are just not aware.

This bill sounds completely unconstitutional! Goddamnit this shit pisses me off!

The constitution hasn't been a factor in 100 years. They know they'd never pass an amendment to get what they want done, so they just ignore it. It should be a crime, but most people raise an eyebrow.

This is happening more and more. Forget due process, we'll just let a czar of bullshit handle it.

I just signed the petition and sent letters to my two State Senators (who opencongress.org shows as co-sponsors) and my Representative.

This is total bullshit.
Bill text here if anyone wants to read it.

it seems like everyday some dogooding arse hole is trying to fuck with our lives. Where I live on the news today some fecker is trying to slowly remove all the parking spaces from our town to make the place more pleasant to live and cos it's eco friendly. They can suck my thermos.

I could see email submit domains and anything else that promotes on the coattails of large brands getting blocked daily if this goes through. Even though the riaa and mpaa are the ones strongly lobbying it, I'm sure other corps like best buy and walmart would make use of the bill and submit that they their property is being infringed upon by unauthorized use of logos or trademarks. Those advertisers might be able to stay alive by registering new domains constantly but if corps start to abuse the law and submit links that are only associated with the alleged infringement domain like network tracking domains or any redirect that could really fuck with the internet industry.

Even youtube would probably get blocked if they were starting up in a PROTECT IP ACT world, all in the name of protecting some shitty movies and songs. What a good excuse in order to execute the ulterior motive of being able to censor the internet.

It's time to setup the gullotine on the DC lawn.

House Trying To Rush Through Its Version Of PROTECT IP; Tech Industry Asks Why? | Techdirt

"During a visit to Silicon Valley last month, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, who is helping to push PROTECT IP through the House, insisted that he'd heard the concerns from some in the tech community and that the bill would be noticeably different than the Senate version.

However, a variety of groups representing the tech industry -- including CCIA, NetCoalition and CEA -- pointed out a few weeks ago that they had not been consulted at all. "

That's exactly it, youtube would not exist if it was created in a world where this law had already been signed.

Where the fuck is Hellblazer, Popeye, and Papajohn56? This shit is a lot more hardcore than the crap they post about. I normally just stand back and watch, not giving a shit, but this is fucked.

Corporations (and their influence) are too strong. When they control the laws, the media, and the conversation things go completely to shit.

It has nothing to do with socialism, communism, liberalism, entitlements etc. It has to do with the fight between democracy and centralized power. You can be both 100% pro capitalism and 100% pro democracy. Thats what made America great, and thats what keeps America great.

With all of our government (and the parties which make it up) completely bought, the only thing saving us right now as a people is our constitution.

It needs to be strengthened. We need amendments which stop the federal government from bailing out private businesses, which state that corporations are not entitled to personhood, and which limit the amount of influence they can have in government.

And we need people to stop being so fucking lazy while they get screwed over daily. Say whatever you want about OWS and its lack of effectiveness or cohesion, most of us are not doing shit to change the problem.
Yup, very true. The centralization of power in this country is killing competition and innovation...
