Just bought a graphics tablet...

So the other day I was fucking around in Photoshop and I thought "Shit, I want to try a graphics tablet"

I went and researched them on the net, and realized that the best ones were made by Wacom, but were way too fucking pricey for a first tablet.

So I ended up getting a "DigiPro WP8060" 8x6 tablet on Amazon for like $44 shipped.

Just got it today. The CD it came with sucked nuts, but I found the manufacturer's website and got the latest drivers and software, and now it fucking rocks! It has 1024 levels of sensitivity, so PS makes it cake to adjust brush sizes and shit with the pen pressure.

Just figured I'd give it a good review... If any of you want to fuck around with a tablet to see what it's like (especially before dropping half a G on a really good one) give this one a shot!

Nothing yet, short of just fucking around with a few images in PS and whatnot...

I'm still getting used to it as a mouse replacement, and so far, in just the past 2 hours of use, it's gotten pretty easy.

The tablet also has shortcut "hotspots" around the edges, with like 30 different fucking spots, so you can just tap to launch a program, or go forward/back/reload/save/exit/open new/ etc

The hardest thing to get used to is that you can't move & continue like you can with a mouse...

In other words, if you pull the pen up, move and drop it again, it doesn't continue where it left off... The tablet has to be considered as a blank screen... You want the edge of your screen, you are going to the edge of the tablet...

It's getting easier to get used to though, and I just got my right click and middle click set up on it too, so now I can go back/forward/up-down and open links in new tabs and shit with it...

I just impulse bought the same thing. getting it in like a week, i've always wanted one of these; had no idea they were so cheap nowadays.

Yeah it was an impulse buy for me too... I figured I wouldn't be too happy with it because it was sooo damn cheap, but I fucking love it!

It's the company that manufactures it. Grab the "drivers" and "software" as it's WAY WAY newer than what comes on the disk...

Also, if you don't plan on using the handwriting recognition (ie writing instead of typing) you will want to get rid of the annoying MS handwriting bar that you get after a reboot...

Open it (it will be sticking out of the left hand of your screen if you are in W7) and go to Options, then disable all the checkboxes on the first screen it shows.

Figured I'd save you a few hours of Googling like I had to do. :)

Once all that shit is installed, you should be able to set up the pen pressure in Photoshop and the like, but only with the new shit, the old software on the CD didn't do shit for me... I think it's aged for XP lol

This is the first time in like 2 years!

And my drawing sucks, at least as of right now... But I'll tell you it's (at least for me) very accurate, so if you have a steady hand, it should give you damn good results.

If you were looking for an example, here's my first drawing I made with my wacom bamboo tablet in late 2008.. they're pretty fun and doesn't take long to get used to the feeling of it.

I'm not too good at drawing but I do use a Wacom Bamboo Touch for regular navigation. Doesn't have a pen, only responds to touch. It's basically a jumbo mouse pad with four buttons. Took some getting used to but now I'm almost as fast with it as I am on a mouse and it's much more relaxing and ergonomic than gripping a mouse for hours.

I use it mostly on the web because it's multi touch sensitive like an iphone. Being able to scroll up/down, navigate back/forward, zoom in/out with finger motions in a browser is very, very nice.

The other great thing is the four buttons are easy to assign to keystrokes. I keep them as alt, ctrl, tab, and enter. Quick cycling through open windows, browser tabs, photoshop files, etc. right on your pointer device. Very nice indeed.

do these things help designers? I can draw but how does it come out on the computer? Can you be very detailed with it? Also is it mainly for drawers, painters or is this something that would be good for creating website designs? I could come up with some badass designs if those tablets are really that good.

The main thing I like it for, is the pressure sensitivity. I don't really draw with mine per ce, but I use it for masks and stuff. For example, if you are trying to mask out the edge of something and trying to make it look natural and you use the pressure sensitivity settings for a black brush, the harder you push the more black it is. By varying the pressure on the edge of what you're masking, it allows you to get a much better result than using a mouse in my opinion. If you're interested in illustration, lots of sites / videos out there with people demonstrating technique. Can definitely do some really cool stuff if you have the talent.

I've never met a professional successful designer without one.
 
Just wanted to update that now after 24 hours of use, I've moved my mouse out of my way... I fucking love this thing. The more I get used to it, the better it becomes. It's awesome, and I recommend everyone try one for a few days.

Especially if you have achy-wrist syndrome on your mouse hand!
 
Bumping this thread up.

Wondering if the Bamboo Pen & Touch is a good entry level tablet. No hardcore graphics work right off the bat. Mainly want it for little graphics jobs where using a mouse is a pain in the ass, and might use it for a little sketching around, too.

You certainly don't have to spend "half a grand" to get a Wacom. Less than $200 will get you one of their 8x6 models. Of course you can spend $2k for their 21" Cintiq which is literally a 21" monitor you paint live on.

And for those of you who would like to see what an artist can do with a Wacom, here's one of my favorites. Last I saw he was using a regular 8x10 or something like that.

I have the largest model of the Intous2. Pretty old model, but still is pretty nice. I need to get it hooked back up, probably would save me some time. I don't really have the desk space for it right now though.
