I just recently figured out how to get the spaces in between my dock icons. I feel so much more organized now... I used to have a lot more programs in the Dock too but it was just slowing me down when I was looking for certain ones so I eliminated everything that I don't use very often. With spotlight being so great you really don't even need to have any apps that are permanently in the dock
