Is it true there is a plan to build a mosque complex next to ground zero?

I came across an article in a British newspaper that says: "An ambitious plan to build a mosque next to New York's Ground Zero has angered residents of the city."

That's insane!! I am all for live and let live when it comes to religions, if it involves consenting adults, but for the muslims to do this is a really stupid move. There is a blog here.

Nuts if true.

I don't agree with it either... That's like opening up a McDonald's next to Hiroshima's ground zero.

They should flank the mosque with a strip club and Nathan's Famous Hotdogs.

Not sure if this is true and I haven't verified the info but I thought I heard last week they were even planning on opening the mosque up on Sept 11th which is why so many are outraged.

Like a slap in the face.

Anyone who finds this plan to build a mosque an insult to those who lost their lives needs to understand that a mosque doesn't have any connection with what happened there.

Let's put it this way. If ground zero had been the biggest hotspot for rapes and murders by black men, would anyone here object if an 'african american cultural community center' was to be built there?

Reading the comments on the CNN page is just typical. As expected, people use words like 'they', 'those' and 'the muslims', lumping everyone into one big group and accusing them as such. It's just ridiculous. Imagine if we were to replace 'muslims' in this context with any other group of people. 'the christians', 'the jews', 'the gays', 'the blacks', any other word would just sound downright discriminatory, but no, using 'muslims' seems to be justified. And to think people have reached this point from just one attack by a group of people who are actually outsiders within their own religion.

And to think people have reached this point from just one attack by a group of people who are actually outsiders within their own religion.

I have yet to hear just one of 'them' ever renounce or speak out against terrorism. Not one.

I'm not going to start another religious debate but they all appear to support murdering 'infidels' or they wouldn't be so quiet about it when it happens.

I honestly can't blame anyone for lumping all of 'them' together.

My thought is so what. I don't hold current day Christians responsible for the crusades. I'm not going to hold all muslims responsible for 9/11.

Regarding lotsofzeros' post, I've heard lots and lots of muslims speak out against the attack on 9/11. I guarantee a 10 second search on google or youtube would turn up enough.

There are over a billion muslims in the world, thinking they all want to fly planes into buildings and kill innocent people is pretty sillly.

best quotes:

"I think it's the right thing to do," said Marvin Bethea, who was a paramedic at ground zero. "I lost 16 friends down there. But Muslims also got killed on 9/11. It would be a good sign of faith that we're not condemning all Muslims and that the Muslims who did this happened to be extremists. As a black man, I know what it's like to be discriminated against when you haven't done anything."

Herbert Ouida, whose son was killed in the attacks, supports the project as a way to bridge cultural divide.
"I understand the anger, the bitterness and hatred, but it only generates more hatred," Ouida said. "Such a large part of the world has this faith, and to say anyone who has this faith is a terrorist, it's terrible."

A memorial to the guys that flew the planes into the buildings would actually be a slap in the face. This particular proposal is irrelevant.

I have yet to hear just one of 'them' ever renounce or speak out against terrorism. Not one.

...

I honestly can't blame anyone for lumping all of 'them' together.

It's easier to just keep propagating false statements than it is to use the google I guess.
