Is Breaking CAPTCHA a Crime? (Wired article)

If only there is a system where chinese can solve captcha for porn and we can monetize that with pix profit. Hmm...

I REALLY doubt its illegal. It's a way to stop automated programs accessing certain areas of a section, OPEN to the public. Meaning anyone can get to the other side of the captcha, so breaking it automatically to get to that point which you could do yourself anyway sounds too hard to make illegal. Scraping websites might as well be illegal too.

Wow the dumbasses in this thread besides the comedians... lol

yes it is. You can get life or even a death sentence in Alabama for it.

You'll also rot in Hell for all eternity afterwards. Don't you read your Koran? "Thou shalt not suffer a captcha-breaker to live"

And its even in the Bible, Corinthians 17:11 "And the breakage of the captcha resounded mightily unto the hordes of the Israelites, and they Googledeth that it was good".

That must be it. Listen to this wise man.

illegal? There are much worst thing out there in the Internet that needs to be dealt with. Auto captcha is nothing.

ummmmm.... if breaking captcha wasn't a crime, why were they invented in the first place. They should have just had a picture saying... SPAM ME SPAM ME, COME ON, YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO...

This would create a very slippery slope. You're essentially giving power to website owners to constitute what is a crime. Anything that breaks their TOS could then be considered a crime.

Right, and a webmaster can stick anything they want in their TOS (more or less.)

I do think we'll eventually see the day where some laws are put on the books covering it all though.
